Cotton On swaps closure chatter for complimentary matcha

Cotton On is doubling down on its presence in Singapore with a weekend activation offering free matcha across five stores, just days after clarifying that it is not exiting Asia.

The fashion retailer said it will roll out “Matcha on Cotton On” on 4 and 5 April, with matcha carts set up at its outlets in VivoCity, 313@Somerset, NEX Serangoon, Tampines Mall and Jem.

Running from 3pm to 5pm daily, the activation will offer complimentary drinks to shoppers while stocks last. Consumers are encouraged to follow Cotton On Asia’s Instagram account and visit participating stores to redeem the giveaway.

According to the brand, the initiative is aimed at thanking its Singapore community and reinforcing its connection with local shoppers.

The move comes shortly after Cotton On addressed speculation around its operations in Asia. On 30 March, a notice published in the Government Gazette stated that Cotton On Asia had entered members’ voluntary liquidation under Singapore’s Insolvency, Restructuring and Dissolution Act 2018, prompting reports that the retailer was shutting down in the region.

Cotton On later clarified that the liquidation relates to a dormant corporate entity and does not affect its retail operations.

“There have been misleading media reports suggesting that Cotton On stores operating in Asia are being closed, this information is incorrect and we have no plans to exit the Asia region,” a spokesperson told MARKETING-INTERACTIVE at the time.

The spokesperson added that the entity under liquidation had never operated stores or employed staff, and was an inactive holding company that is no longer required.

Under Singapore’s corporate and insolvency framework, a members’ voluntary liquidation is typically used to wind up a solvent company that is no longer needed, and does not indicate financial distress or wider operational closures.

Cotton On continues to operate physical stores and eCommerce platforms across multiple markets in Asia.
