Leadership change at Malaysia Airports as Iskandar Mizal takes on MD reins

Iskandar Mizal Mahmood has returned to Malaysia Airports Holdings (MAHB), this time helming the role of MD. This comes as Mohd Shukrie Mohd Salleh (pictured right) steps down as group CEO to pursue other opportunities. Mohd Shukrie first joined MAHB as its COO in May 2019, before assuming the position of group CEO in March 2020.

Iskandar (pictured left) was previously MAHB's GM from 1999 to 2003 where he led the IPO and the listing of the company on Bursa Malaysia. During his time as MAHB's GM, Iskandar's portfolio included finance, corporate finance, business development, and investor relations. He was also involved in international ventures including taking over the operations of India's Hyderabad Rajiv Gandhi International Airport and as a board member of Cambodia's Phnom Penh and Siem Reap airports.

He came from Media Prima where he last helmed the role of group MD and first joined the company in 2019 as group executive director. As its group executive director, Iskandar assisted the group in its transformation and turnaround initiatives. According to a statement from Media Prima during his appointment to the role of group managing director, the company said that Iskandar had played a key role in turning around the company and bringing international content production companies into Iskandar Malaysia Studios in 2018. He was one of the key figures in the production of Paskal The Movie, one of Malaysia’s highest grossing box office movies, where he was one of the executive producers.

Overall, he has 32 years of experience under his belt, of which 18 years were in leadership positions.Other leadership roles he helmed included group CEO at Pos Malaysia, MD of Manipal Education Malaysia, founding CEO of Malaysian Biotechnology Corporation and chairman of Malaysian Bio-XCell.

"Mohd Shukrie has been instrumental in steering the group through the worst period of the pandemic and sustaining the group’s operation and financial stability," said MAHB. As the aviation industry navigates the ever-changing landscape, MAHB said it welcomes a leader who will be able to steer the company into an environment of continuous innovation. A+M has reached out to MAHB for additional information in regards to Iskandar's new role.

Separately in July, MAHB filed a police report concerning a "baseless and untrue posting" written by an individual named "VirusInMOH" on the community blog of the portal klse.i3investor.com. Not only are the allegations baseless and untrue, but MAHB also said they were "malicious in nature with the intention of damaging the reputation and integrity of Malaysia Airports and its group CEO". "MAHB categorically objects to the posting and the subsequent malicious comments resulting from it," it added.
