Kara takes coconut beyond the kitchen for World Coconut Day

Kara marked World Coconut Day by taking coconut beyond the kitchen and into the daily routines of Malaysians, with a day-long activation across five transit hubs in the Klang Valley.

The brand handed out close to 6,000 complimentary treats made with Kara products, including nasi lemak, coconut lattes and a “Koppiku x Kara cendol”. Kara also partnered social enterprise Ibupreneur to create coconut cookies, which were distributed at each station.

The on-ground push was supported by a nationwide digital campaign and an exclusive World Coconut Day radio contest with MyFM, EraFM, SinarFM and HitzFM. Kara also extended the campaign beyond the Klang Valley with a digital contest running from 2 to 7 September, alongside a special eCommerce promotion.

“World Coconut Day was our chance to bring Kara directly into the daily rhythm of Malaysians, from their morning commute to their dinner table. Seeing commuters enjoying our surprise treats on the ground was amazing, but the digital response was equally overwhelming," said Cheong May Yeen, head of marketing, Kara.

"Proving that santan and coconut milk are far from boring products, but rather a modern brand consumer actively wants to celebrate and share, was one of our proudest achievements,” added Cheong.

For Kara, the celebration is intended to become more than a one-day occasion. This year marks the first time the brand has celebrated World Coconut Day, with Susanto Lee, general manager of Kara Marketing, positioning it as part of a longer-term push to put coconut at the centre of everyday consumption.

“This inaugural World Coconut Day is a milestone for Kara. It reflects our long-term commitment to championing coconut as a versatile, everyday ingredient for Malaysian households,” he said. “The response we’ve seen gives us real confidence to build this into an annual celebration and keep innovating for our consumers.”

The campaign builds on Kara’s launch of Barista Coconut Milk at the end of last year, as the brand looked to expand coconut milk into consumption occasions beyond traditional cooking, including daily beverages, specialty coffees and modern desserts.

The launch was supported by the campaign film “Welcome to Kara Island”, which followed a barista’s journey and positioned the product around coffee craft and café culture.
