HSBC has thrown its weight behind a new sporting initiative to support junior golfers in Hong Kong, including an annual match between the top juniors from Hong Kong and their counterparts in China.
The HSBC Hong Kong Junior Golf Programme will include a number of initiatives, including a HSBC Golf For Schools programme in a bid to cement the bank as one of the biggest supporters of junior golf development in Greater China.
HSBC is one of the biggest supporters of major gold tournaments around the world, but is now turning its attention to more community-based grassroots events.
“As a major supporter of golf across the region, we plan to integrate this new programme with our other relevant golf sponsorships to build a close connection between junior golf and the professional game, offering fantastic learning and playing opportunities for our junior golfers involved in the scheme,” Peter Wong, deputy chairman and chief executive of HSBC Asia Pacific, said.
Ning Li, president of the Hong Kong Golf Association, added that having a blue-chip sponsor is a massive boost to the development of the junior game in Hong Kong.
“It enables us to rapidly expand the scale of the programme, get more kids into golf and provide some incredible opportunities for our top juniors.
“With HSBC as our new financial partner, along with the support of our car partner Mercedes-Benz, our golf clubs, The R&A and our other sponsors, we could not be better placed to deliver further success.”
HSBC and HKGA is aiming to reach 15 schools and more than 300 children in year one.
