How TNB’s CNY film urges Malaysians to look beyond first impressions

Tenaga Nasional Berhad (TNB) has unveiled its Chinese New Year 2026 festive film, “Roaring Blessings”, taking a more introspective turn by challenging viewers to reflect on how quickly they judge others without understanding their stories.
Developed by Chariot Agency, the film marks an evolution in TNB’s festive storytelling, shifting away from purely celebratory narratives to explore empathy, compassion and everyday social tensions familiar to many Malaysians.
Set against the colourful backdrop of a lion dance troupe, “Roaring Blessings” weaves festive symbolism with a deeply human story. The film follows Ming, the disciplined leader of the troupe, and Kenny, a young boy whose determination to take part far exceeds his physical abilities. During training, Kenny’s awkward movements and visible fatigue prompt Ming, and viewers, to quietly question whether he belongs.
As the narrative unfolds, Ming begins to uncover the deeper truth behind Kenny’s perseverance. What initially appears to be a mismatch slowly transforms into a powerful moment of understanding, reframing Kenny’s role and revealing the value of looking beyond surface impressions.

“Chinese New Year films are often centred on light-hearted, feel-good moments,” shared Adrian Cheah, managing director of Chariot Agency. “With TNB, we saw an opportunity to do something braver. To tell a story that reflects real social issues and everyday judgments Malaysians face. ‘Roaring Blessings’ marks TNB’s first step into more purposeful festive storytelling, showing that empathy and understanding can be just as powerful as celebration.”
Creative director Christyna Fong added that the story reflects a universal truth about how people are often defined by first impressions. “With ‘Roaring Blessings’, we wanted to remind Malaysians that kindness begins when we pause, look deeper, and truly understand one another.”
From the brand’s perspective, the film aligns with TNB’s broader ambition to remain culturally relevant while staying grounded in its core values. Samsul Ariffin Zainuddin, head of group corporate communications at TNB, said: “This film was created to do more than mark a festive moment. It centres on human connection, everyday kindness, understanding, and experiences that truly matter."

And of course, TNB's resident mascot Jero has to make his festive film appearance for fans.
At its heart, “Roaring Blessings” is a reminder that the spirit of Chinese New Year lies not only in tradition, but in the values that strengthen shared humanity. The film was produced in collaboration with Reservoir Production and directed by Quek Shio Chuan, and is now live across TNB’s digital platforms nationwide, including YouTube, Facebook, Instagram, TikTok and LinkedIn.
Last year, TNB had taken the heartwarming and humorous route with its CNY campaign, honouring family members who preserve cherished traditions during the celebrations. The film, titled "The Family Anchor", highlights the often-unseen efforts of family members who work tirelessly to ensure the spirit of togetherness shines bright during Chinese New Year. The film centers around Mei, the oldest daughter of the family, who makes it her mission to keep a promise she made to her late parents.
This includes making sure that none of her siblings go on their secretly-planned Japan trip, getting new clothes, and purchasing abalone from the traditional chinese medicine store - just like how their father used to. She later sets up a reunion dinner with her family and relatives, feeling accomplished that she's successfully upkept the family tradition.
