Grab Philippines has planted the first batch of the 80,000 mangrove trees it pledged to nurture, marking an important milestone in its green programme. The tree planting took place in Dulao, La Union, and was part of the company's Earth Day celebrations in 2025.

This initiative highlights Grab's larger commitment to driving environmental sustainability within the Philippines' ride-hailing and on-demand delivery industries. Launched in February, Grab's green programme offers users a tangible way to contribute to environmental preservation.

Through the Grab App, users can activate a special toggle that allows them to contribute 2 pesos for every GrabCar ride and 1 peso for every GrabFood or GrabMart transaction. This simple action empowers individuals to play a direct role in supporting sustainability efforts across the country.

Filipino actress and model Maxene Magalona introduced her followers to the GrabForGood Forest in La Union, explaining how they can easily contribute. To donate, simply open the GrabApp, navigate to the profile page, select "Support the Environment," and toggle the switch to start contributing.

The GrabForGood Forest is a five-hectare mangrove site, part of an ambitious mangrove enrichment project being carried out in partnership with the Dulao Fishpond and Fishpen Producers Cooperative, the sustainability NGO Fostering Education and Environment for Development (FEED), and EcoMatcher.

Dulao, a coastal village, is vulnerable to rising sea levels and increasingly severe typhoons, challenges that threaten both food and water security. Mangrove forests have been identified as a critical component in safeguarding the area's coastline, as they not only provide vital habitats for marine biodiversity but also support the livelihoods of local fishing communities.

In a statement, Don Mariano Marcos Memorial State University (DMMMSU) announced its involvement in the project's technical direction and sustainability strategy. The university is offering expert guidance to ensure the initiative's success and long-term impact.

"This initiative is part of a broader mission to combat climate change, restore biodiversity, and build resilient coastal ecosystems—goals that DMMMSU continues to champion through its academic and outreach programmes," it said.

The university added that the growth of the mangroves will be monitored using TreeCorder, a digital tool from EcoMatcher that allows real-time tracking of each planted seedling.
