Friendly rivalry ensues between Lazada MY and Shopee MY following birthday cake stunt

Shopee Malaysia responded with grace upon receiving Lazada’s cake for its 9th Birthday bash. In a Facebook post, Shopee posted a picture of its team cutting the cake and also threw in a promo code for its upcoming 4.4 Mega Shopping Day sale - HAPPY9BDAY273. Shopee said, in conjunction with Lazada’s 9th birthday, it would be throwing in an exclusive RM9 voucher for its 4.4 Mega Shopping Day!

Not one to be left behind, Lazada decided to hijack the good spirited nature of Shopee and said consumers can use the same promo code for their website deals as well. Lazada said this was to make the birthday extra special for everyone so everyone can enjoy more on the birthday.

In a statement to A+M, Tan Ming Kit, Senior Manager (Marketing) of Shopee Malaysia said, “We were both touched and tickled when Lazada sent us a cake to mark its 9th birthday. We knew we had to respond because it was an opportunity to bring some fun and cheer to netizens.”

“We did this by responding to their social media post. In addition to thanking Lazada for the delicious cake, we also gave away RM9 no minimum spend discount vouchers so online shoppers were able to benefit more from the banter. We gave out 5,000 vouchers which were valid only on 27 March to mark the occasion, and they were fully redeemed within minutes of 12AM,” Tan added.

The friendly rivalry was ignited last week when Lazada Malaysia decided to send a birthday cake to Shopee last week as it wanted to share joy and love with its friends and neighbours, adding that if food represents the language of love, cake is the greatest love of all. The cake, which is in the shape of its logo that resembles a heart, was also sent to Boost, Touch 'n Go, realme, and Durex. 

CMO Diana Boo told A+M that the surprise cake drop was part of Lazada's Surprise Birthday Sale’s 360 marketing campaign which included PR, digital, on-ground and OOH activations. In addition, it is also bringing Lazada's 9 Super Party to consumers tomorrow on Astro Ria, TV3 and LazLive via the Lazada App.

For the event, Lazada brought on board American singer Katy Perry and K-pop band NCT Dream to headline its upcoming Lazada Super Party on 26 March. The concert also features top celebrities in Southeast Asia including Malaysia's Ismail Izzani and Haqiem Rusli, Singapore's Jasmine Sokko and Nathan Hartono, and Indonesia's Agnez Mo and Raisa. The concert also includes its Shoppertainment segments such as Voucher Rain, Guess It!, and Shake It!
