DOT trucks giving free Filipino food in Taiwan to promote Philippine travel

The Philippine Department of Tourism (DOT) in Taiwan has been giving away free Filipino food to Taiwanese to entice them to visit the more-than-7,000-island archipelago. Its trucks will be going around the city of Taipei---and those who take pictures of the vehicles, post them online, and like the DOT Facebook page will be treated to popular Filipino dishes.

About 1,400 meals in the trucks consist of the favorite adobo and sisig dishes, best taken with mojitos and the Philippines’ iconic San Miguel Beer. Complementing them are the staples cooked and found in many Filipino homes and restaurants like garlic rice, salted egg, and a serving of pickled papaya. Dessert in the form of turon or a deep-fried banana roll will be welcomed by those with a sweet tooth.

Since the country opened its borders in April, the DOT has been encouraging tourists to return. Taiwan ranks #5 in a  list  of nations whose people are frequent visitors. More than 300,000 Taiwanese travelled to the Philippines in 2019, spending US$252.10 million.

About 150,000 overseas Filipino workers (OFWs) are based in the island nation and habitually go back to the Philippines as balikbayans.
