Carlsberg’s HYROX Malaysia tie-up stirs a debate on health and faith

Carlsberg’s HYROX Malaysia tie-up stirs a debate on health and faith

A month before HYROX makes its Malaysian debut, its partnership with Carlsberg has come under scrutiny, with questions raised over the suitability of an alcohol brand sponsoring a fitness competition in the Muslim-majority country.

The partnership drew criticism on social media, including from a Malaysian Muslim Threads user who said they would not participate in the race unless the sponsorship was reconsidered.

In the post, which has garnered more than 160,000 views and 3,000 likes, the user described the partnership as "disappointing" and said they found it difficult to reconcile with an event that promotes a healthy lifestyle. They added that while they respected differing views, the sponsorship did not sit well with their values.

Other users also questioned the fit between an alcohol brand and a health-focused sporting event in Malaysia. However, these comments reflect individual reactions on social media and should not be taken as representative of wider consumer sentiment.

Media intelligence firm Dataxet NAMA said the controversy appears to pose a more immediate operational and reputational risk to HYROX, as the event organiser faces questions over its sponsorship decision and the potential implications for event approval.

Carlsberg, meanwhile, faces reputational scrutiny over its association with a fitness competition, particularly given concerns about the perceived clash between alcohol and sporting values, the firm added.

In addition, Dataxet NAMA noted that the negative reaction centres on the perceived incompatibility between alcohol sponsorship and health-focused events, alongside Malaysia's religious and cultural sensitivities.

A+M observed that the promotional image shared by the Threads user is no longer visible on Carlsberg Malaysia and HYROX Malaysia's Instagram pages. The same creative, however, remains on the Instagram pages of HYROX Singapore and Carlsberg Singapore.

The discussion comes amid a more significant development. On the morning of 4 November, Astro Awani reported that the Ministry of Youth and Sports would not approve HYROX Kuala Lumpur 2026 unless the alcohol sponsorship associated with the event was fully withdrawn.

Following that, Carlsberg Malaysia has announced on Instagram that it is not a a sponsor of HYROX Kuala Lumpur.  It elaborated that Carlsberg Malaysia "adheres to the country's local laws, regulations, and respect cultural sensitivities".

HYROX Malaysia followed suit with a post announcing that together with Carlsberg, it has made "the decision to not extend the partnership to the Malaysia race". It also took responsibility, saying that it "understands why this has caused concern and offence" and that it "got this wrong".

HYROX Kuala Lumpur is scheduled to take place from 10 to 13 December at the Malaysia International Trade and Exhibition Centre (MITEC), marking the competition's first edition in Malaysia.

AirAsia is the event's title partner, while Watsons was named official health and beauty retail partner for Kuala Lumpur and six other Asia Pacific markets last week.

Carlsberg's involvement also follows partnerships with HYROX in other markets. At HYROX Hong Kong this year, participants were offered a pint of Carlsberg after completing the race.

The scrutiny also comes against a backdrop of consumer-led brand boycotts and heightened attention on corporate affiliations in Malaysia. A+M previously reported that 52% of Malaysians surveyed said they had boycotted brands they believed were doing business with Israel.

More recently, Oriental Kopi's menu drew criticism online over its language offerings. The homegrown F&B chain subsequently updated its menu to include Bahasa Melayu, with Tamil also planned.
