BSP taps mobile tech to deepen financial access and public engagement

The Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas (BSP) — the central bank of the Philippines — has officially launched a new mobile app designed to bring its services and information directly to the fingertips of Filipinos. The move reflects a broader digital push by the BSP to increase financial inclusion and strengthen public engagement.

Although the app has been available since January, with over 2,600 active users to date, it was formally introduced on 14 April, The Philippine STAR reported. Developed fully in-house by the central bank's IT systems management department, the app is now available for download on both the Google Play Store and Apple App Store.

In a social media post, BSP explained that the app offers a simpler and faster way for users to access key rates, receive public announcements and statistical reports, and locate BSP offices—among other services. Users can also tailor their experience with a quick access menu and use the BSP Online Buddy chatbot to submit queries or complaints.

A standout feature on the roadmap is the integration of the upcoming BSP E-Learning Academy. This initiative aims to deepen public understanding of personal finance, economics and central banking. Additionally, an interactive module on the 1000-peso polymer banknote allows users to explore its security elements and design in detail.

The app's development cycle began in earnest around May 2024, with planning followed by an accelerated development phase from June to December last year. Despite the tight timeline, the app is now ready and serves as a mobile gateway to the central bank's wide array of services and educational content.

"The BSP mobile app is our way of staying connected with the public," BSP deputy governor Bernadette Romulo-Puyat said in a release. BSP managing director Charina B. De Vera-Yap added, "This new platform aims to enhance your experience and encourage greater interaction with the BSP. Once downloaded, the app can be accessed anytime, even offline, and offers personalisation to match your specific needs and interests."

Meanwhile, director Reynaldo Florencio T. Zipagan encouraged the public to not only use the app but actively participate in its improvement. "With the official launch of the BSP mobile app, we look forward to all of us becoming champions, promoting the app, and helping improve it through your valuable feedback," he said.

This initiative aligns with BSP's strategic goal of broadening stakeholder engagement, as set out in its 2024–2029 enterprise strategy map.
