Indonesia’s foreign ministry is eyeing the use of influencers from South America and Europe to promote tourism to the archipelago. In doing so, 21 bloggers and influencers from these markets were invited to explore Banyuwangi from 19 to 23 October 2018, according to The Jakarta Post. The same trip also saw the involvement of tour operators as well as journalists from these regions. This includes countries such as Brazil, Chile, Peru, Uruguay, Venezuela, Greece, Portugal, Spain and Belgium, said Darianto Harsono, sub directorate III head for the ministry. According to Darianto, Banyuwangi was chosen for the region's rapid tourism development, the report added. The organised media and influencer trip also saw participants attending the Gandrung Sewu Festival, as well as visit places of interests such as the Ijen crater, Bangsring Underwater, Red Island and Alas Puro National Park.Indonesia has been making several strides in the past year to push its tourism offering. Just last week, Indonesia’s tourism ministry struck a deal with Liverpool FC player Sadio Mané, following a contract signed between Tourism Indonesia and Mediapro Asia. The deal looks to generate more interest towards Indonesia as a tourism destination, especially towards Millennials. In July, the ministry also revealed plans to bolster its airports with low-cost carrier terminals to boost foreign tourist arrivals to the country. Earlier this year, it also revealed plans to acquire 700,000 tourists from India. This is compared with 485,000 Indian tourists from the year before. This was to be done by targeting Indian tourists visiting Malaysia and Singapore.(Photo courtesy: 123RF)
