Youku announced the signing of two licensing deals with NBCUniversal and Sony Pictures Television and subscribers to the Youku service will be able to watch films from the two studios’ libraries for no additional fee.
The films are also available to all Youku users via different distribution channels, including its flagship online platform, SmartTV solutions and set-top boxes.
The agreements will also enable Youku users to have faster access to the movies from each of the two studios such as Sony’s Blade Runner 2049, which was recently released in the cinemas in China, and Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle. The upcoming films from NBCUniversal include Jurassic World 2: Fallen Kingdom, which is scheduled to premiere in the US in June 2018, and Darkest Hour.
Yang Weidong, president of Youku, Alibaba Digital Media and Entertainment Group said the relationships will enhance its platform’s penetration into the home entertainment business and push the online video and OTT businesses to greater heights.
At the same time, NBCUniversal will provide entertainment programmes to be hosted exclusively on Youku, its members will also be able to participate in various activities around these entertainment programmes and have the opportunity to receive exclusive rewards such as Universal Studios travel packages and tickets to Hollywood award ceremonies.
Sony Pictures Television will provide movie series such as Resident Evil, The Smurfs and The Spider-Man.
