WeLab Bank has appointed Tat Lee as its new chief executive.

Lee was most recently the alternate chief executive and executive director of WeLab Bank. He joined WeLab in 2013 and was the company's first employee. Over the last eight years, he has taken up a number of roles in the bank, including head of product and risk management, and later general manager of WeLend. During his tenure at WeLend, the business grew from a start-up to becoming Hong Kong’s largest pure online lender platform powered by technology and AI.

Since 2018, Tat has been involved in building the foundation for WeLab Bank, from obtaining the virtual banking license to developing the business strategy.

Prior to joining WeLab, he held senior roles in leading international financial institutions, including HSBC and Standard Chartered Bank’s former consumer finance subsidiary, PrimeCredit.

“Looking back on my experience in the fintech industry, I believe to revolutionise the banking experience, we must combine the power of people with the power of fintech. Through game-changing technologies such as AI and big data analytics in line with the people-oriented concept, we are designing digital-first banking services. WeLab Bank is now in the most exciting new market opportunity, and I hope to open up a new era of virtual banking," said Lee.

Lee is replacing Adrian Tse, who stepped down in December 2020 from the role due to personal reasons. Since Tse's departure, Lee has taken up his position on an interim basis.

Prof. KC Chan, chairman of WeLab Bank, commented on this appointment, “Lee is a dynamic leader with significant experience in growing businesses, with in-depth knowledge of Hong Kong and the fintech industry. We are delighted to have him lead WeLab Bank, scaling to the next level, beyond the initial launch. The future is bright for the energy that Lee brings to propel WeLab Bank’s development to greater heights in the long run.”
