VTC reframes foundation studies as proof of adulthood

VTC reframes foundation studies as proof of adulthood

The Vocational Training Council (VTC) has teamed up with MBCS, the content arm of Omnicom Media, to redefine how brands engage students at their most uncertain moment, as competition intensifies across Hong Kong's tertiary education sector.

As one of the main providers of tertiary education in Hong Kong for Secondary 6 school leavers, VTC has long set the standard for its diploma of foundation studies (DFS), offering a vital pathway for students whose strengths lie beyond traditional academics. But as more similar foundation programmes emerge across institutions, curriculum alone no longer sets them apart. With offerings becoming increasingly hard to distinguish, VTC has faced a key question: how to stand out in a space filled with generic pathway messaging.

Rather than amplifying progression claims, VTC has chosen to address the deeper tension driving student decision-making. Behind every programme comparison lies a quieter, more personal question: “Am I good enough?”

Working closely with VTC, MBCS has translated this insight into "Proof of being an adult” (大人的證明,).  Inspired by the Gen Z expression "junior adult" (初級大人), the campaign reframes adulthood as something earned through experience, resilience and growth rather than defined solely by academic performance.

Instead of positioning DFS simply as a one-year foundation programme, the campaign has elevated it as a space where students accumulate their own proof of becoming an adult - they are capable, evolving, and ready for what’s next.

The campaign launched on 23 June, strategically timed ahead of the HKDSE results release, and will run through August to stay relevant throughout the critical decision-making period. Led by a thematic video, the campaign rolled out primarily across social and digital platforms to reach students where they are most engaged. Authentic alumni stories were amplified through online content to show that success is rarely linear.

To reinforce visibility during peak consideration moments, out‑of‑home placements include digital panels, four‑sheet posters, and bus body advertising, alongside on‑campus materials and admission talk activations, ensuring DFS remains present both online and offline as students weigh their next steps. Adding further depth to the campaign, several members of the MBCS project team are VTC alumni themselves, which allowed the team to draw from genuine, lived experiences.

By choosing belief over comparison, VTC and MBCS have repositioned DFS beyond a bridging qualification and elevated the brand’s role in one of life’s defining transitions.

Natalie Chew, director of communications and public relations office of VTC, said: “Results season is when many students begin to doubt themselves. Our responsibility goes beyond progression pathways. We want students to understand that their potential is not defined by a single set of grades. Through DFS, students are given opportunities to explore different professions and industry pathways early on, helping them better understand their strengths and aspirations. DFS provides direction, but more importantly it restores confidence and empowers students to take their next step with purpose.”

Kenny Wong, business director from MBCS, said: “In an industry dominated by grades and outcomes, we saw an opportunity to shift the conversation. If students do not believe in themselves, no pathway will matter. ‘大人的證明’ reframes success beyond grades and reconnects the brand with the emotional reality of its audience. Confidence becomes the product. Growth becomes the narrative.”
