Volkswagen Passenger Cars Malaysia (VPCM) has named its first-ever brand ambassador — Malaysia’s national cycling icon, Azizulhasni Awang.
Known to many as the "pocket rocketman", Azizulhasni’s appointment marks a historic milestone for the German marque’s presence in Malaysia and reflects a new era in local brand-building for Volkswagen.
The automotive company said in a statement that the partnership is anchored in shared values: performance, precision, and the pursuit of progress, with VPCM highlighting that Azizulhasni’s journey from Dungun to Olympic podiums mirrors Volkswagen’s ethos of turning dreams into reality through grit, innovation, and resilience.

“Azizul’s story is one of extraordinary ambition, agility and drive. Much like our cars, he represents performance that is purposeful and enduring,” said Renate Noessler, managing director of VPCM. “He is not just a champion on the track, he’s a role model off it. We are honoured to have him as part of the Volkswagen family.”
The partnership will see Azizulhasni featured in upcoming brand campaigns, activations and digital content, serving not only as the face of Volkswagen in Malaysia but as a rallying point for a new generation of customers who value both heritage and ambition.
Azizulhasni shared that the collaboration goes beyond typical endorsements. “I’ve always believed that success is built on consistency, detail and the courage to take on challenges. Values that align perfectly with Volkswagen,” he said.
“To be chosen as their first ambassador is a true honour. This partnership isn’t just about cars or cycling, it’s about inspiring Malaysians to go further, faster and never settle," the athlete added.

The partnership was unveiled at a media event at Volkswagen Puchong by Renate Noessler, the MD of Volkswagen Passenger Cars Malaysia (VPCM).
Volkswagen’s move signals a deeper strategy to connect with Malaysian consumers in a more personal and purposeful way, spotlighting not just the engineering of its cars but the lifestyle and mindset they represent. With this latest chapter, VPCM is steering the brand into more emotionally resonant territory, putting a human face to its performance-led legacy.
However, Volkswagen is not the only global brand looking to deepen its footprint in the Malaysian market through the appointment of a local ambassador. Earlier in May, G-SHOCK picked local entertainment powerhouse Zizan Razak as its first Malaysian brand ambassador.
The appointment of Zizan, who hails from Dungun, Terengganu, represented the brand’s latest effort to connect with bold and expressive personalities under its “FAMS” platform, which stands for fashion, art, music, and sports. Known for his dynamic presence both on-screen and off, Zizan embodies the G-SHOCK values of resilience, confidence and authenticity, the brand said in a statement.
