British video game development studio Double Eleven expanding its operations in Kuala Lumpur, investing about RM5.68 million in a new office and eyeing plans to grow its staff count to more than 110 individuals in the next two to three years. The company first launched its studio last January and has founder Lee Hutchinson (pictured) said it chose Malaysia as a second base given its access to high-calibre talent and a great ecosystem between the government, universities and businesses.

It currently has 25 employees in Malaysia and the Kuala Lumpur team is working together with Double Eleven's main teams to gain experience, eventually taking on their own projects in the future. Currently, the Malaysian studio's core activities are focused on offering game development services such as quality assurance, coding, art, and design support. Overall, the company said it underwent tremendous growth over the past year, going from a staff count of 80 in 2019 to hiring its 200th employee in 2020. Launched in 2009, Double Eleven has worked with global game and tech companies such as Microsoft. Among the list of popular titles it has worked on include Rust: Console Edition, Minecraft Dungeons, LEGO Harry Potter, Goat Simulator, Prison Architect and Crackdown 3. A+M has reached out to Double Eleven for additional information on growing its marketing team in Kuala Lumpur.

Meanwhile, Double Eleven's expansion in Malaysia has been lauded and supported by the Malaysian Digital Economy Corporation (MDEC), which helped the video game development studio establish its presence in the company since 2017. This included helping incorporate Double Eleven Malaysia in 2018 and approving the company's MSC Status application in 2020. MDEC also connected Double Eleven to various Malaysian colleges and universities involved in games development, including The One Academy, UOW Malaysia KDU, and Asia Pacific University. At the same time, MDEC also facilitated collaboration, partnerships, and outsourcing opportunities between Double Eleven and local game development studios such as Passion Republic, Lemon Sky Studios, Streamline Studios, and other indie developers.
