Tulus, Sejauh Mata Memandang weave emotion and craft into Independence Day showcase

In celebration of Indonesia’s 80th Independence Day, slow fashion label Sejauh Mata Memandang has tapped singer-songwriter Tulus (pictured, left) to launch a collaborative collection and exhibition titled “Pasar Kita”. The showcase, held at Grand Indonesia until 31 August 2025, merges textile art, lyrical emotion, and community spirit in a tactile, cultural homage to Indonesia’s traditional markets.
The partnership sees Tulus’ handwritten sketches - rooted in his lyrical reflections on humanity and nature - interlaced with Sejauh Mata Memandang’s signature motifs. The result is a deeply personal collection that honours shared values of sustainability, creativity, and connection.
“Beyond portraying the sense of togetherness found in these spaces, this exhibition also serves as a response to Indonesia’s increasingly challenging economic conditions - where labour-intensive sectors such as textiles and fashion are under pressure due to declining purchasing power, rising raw material costs, and intense global competition,” said Chitra Subyakto (pictured, right), founder and creative director of Sejauh Mata Memandang.

“Through Pasar Kita, we aim to create a space for cross-sector collaboration while supporting the sustainability of small businesses and local artisans so they can continue to grow. That’s why Pasar Kita also serves as a curated platform for various MSMEs and artisan partners of Studio Sejauh from different regions across Indonesia,” she added.
TULUS, whose past collaboration with the brand includes the “Teman Gajah” initiative, shared a personal resonance with the effort: “As someone who tries to practise extending the lifespan of clothing, this collaboration feels both aligned and personal. It connects music, garments, and a mindful expression of the relationship between humans and the Earth we call home.”
The pieces feature indigo and black hues - tonal signatures of Tulus’ stage persona - rendered on cotton and TENCEL™ through hand-screen printing in Bali and batik stamping in Pekalongan. Designs draw on themes of duality and harmony, echoing balance between nature and humankind through poleng-like grids and stylised waves, sun, clouds, and moon symbols.
“Pasar Kita” goes beyond apparel. The exhibit’s layout is built with a circular design philosophy: 90% of the materials are reused or upcycled. From repurposed wood panels to fabric offcuts transformed into decor, every detail nods to responsible craft. A highlight is the Warung Pop-Up counter clad in chicken-motif Tegel Kunci tiles - an emblem of Sejauh’s visual identity.
Also featured are curated booths from local artisans and SMEs across Indonesia, including Cusia by Shibiru, Craft Denim, Gekiori, Sakombu, Toja Indonesia, Kait Handmade, and Vitarlenology. Their presence reinforces the event’s role as a marketplace of ideas and craftsmanship - a living homage to the communal spirit of traditional markets.
Bank Central Asia (BCA), a key partner of the event, underscored its support for Indonesia’s creative industries. “BCA is committed to providing seamless payment facilities for visitors, while also strengthening the creative ecosystem that brings together the fashion, music, and MSME sectors,” said Adrian Hermansyah, senior vice president of BCA.
Throughout the exhibition, BCA is offering a variety of promotions, such as 0% instalment plans and discounts of up to IDR 300,000 (US$18.37). Moreover, with every garment purchased from the collection, a tree will be planted in the Leuser Ecosystem in East Aceh.
