Tourism Malaysia reportedly under investigation for advertising and procurement matters

A top-ranking official of Tourism Malaysia is being investigated for procurement and advertising matters by the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) over alleged abuse of power, said a recent report on The Star.

According to the newspaper, MACC has been at the headquarter of Tourism Malaysia, which is an agency under the Ministry of Tourism and Culture, since earlier this week taking statements from four Tourism Malaysia officers. A+M has also reached out to Tourism Malaysia for a statement on the matter.

The news comes shortly after the tourism promotion board appointed Datuk Siew Ka Wei as its chairman. Moreover, last year the tourism body launched a major marketing campaign to lure tourists to local shores. The campaign was driven around the story of proximity in Malaysia where sights, shopping and shows are merely “Dekat Je,” loosely translated as “close by”.

The campaign kicked off with a song that was done in collaboration with local rap artist Altimet and his band, the Diplomats of Drums. A music video was then created to get the audience to buy into the message of travelling domestically in a fun and energetic way. The campaign ran on TV, radio, OOH and print mediums.

Meanwhile, Tourism Malaysia last year appointed several agencies to work on its domestic market portfolio worth RM15 million a year and the contracts run for three years.
