The classic Monopoly set just got a Malaysian makeover

In celebration of its 90th anniversary, the iconic board game Monopoly is rolling the dice on nostalgia and local flair. Hasbro has unveiled a brand-new classic Monopoly Malaysia edition, complete with modern visuals, bigger tokens and landmarks unique to the country.
Alongside the refreshed local board, the company has also released three creative expansion packs designed to turn game night into a whirlwind of chaos, crime and cash, Hasbro shared in a statement.

The new classic edition celebrates Monopoly’s longstanding global success, which includes more than 275 million copies sold across 103 countries. Translated into 47 languages, the game has become a cultural mainstay for generations.
In the Malaysian edition, players can expect a visual refresh and upgraded components such as bigger houses and hotels. Enhanced storage features also make this version easier to manage. What sets it apart is the localised content showcasing Malaysia’s unique identity, positioning it as a collector’s item for both residents and tourists.

To spice things up further, Hasbro has introduced three new expansion packs, each injecting playful mischief into the familiar format. 'Free parking jackpot' turns a standard board into a casino-style experience where players spin for cash and dodge rent by upgrading to a deal mobile.
'Go to jail' introduces a corruption mechanic where time spent behind bars gives players cards that offer sneaky advantages and heist opportunities. 'Buy everything' pushes the chaos further by making almost every space on the board (from the bank to jail) up for sale. This pack even allows players to win the game instantly by completing special Sale cards.
With these updates, Hasbro is reimagining the Monopoly experience for a new generation, mixing cultural relevance with a sharp sense of fun. The new Malaysia edition and expansion packs are now available at major retailers and online platforms including Toys "R" Us Malaysia, for RM99.90.
Hasbro itself had refreshed the classic format with a sleek redesign for its 90th anniversary earlier in January this year. The updated edition featured a more compact box, redesigned money, and larger, easier-to-handle tokens, all while retaining the traditional gameplay fans know and love.
Monopoly’s influence in marketing campaigns has grown beyond the living room table, with brands leveraging its nostalgic pull and gameplay mechanics to connect with consumers in fresh, localised ways. AIA Singapore, for instance, recently launched an insurer-branded Monopoly set to mark SG60. The custom board game was designed to encourage conversations around health, wealth and purposeful living while integrating elements of local culture and life milestones.
Beyond product launches, Monopoly has also become a platform for experiential marketing. Pizza Hut Singapore teamed up with Hasbro earlier this year to create an in-store Monopoly takeover that appealed to Millennials and Gen Z consumers.
Customers at selected outlets could interact with a life-sized “Jail” photo spot, take part in mini-games and win exclusive food vouchers by rolling a giant dice. The initiative highlights how brands are increasingly embracing the cultural currency of Monopoly to engage audiences both physically and digitally, using nostalgia as a creative entry point for deeper brand interaction.
Now, Hasbro is bringing that same energy to Malaysian audiences with the launch of the new classic Monopoly Malaysia edition. Celebrating the game's 90th anniversary, this localised version puts a local spin on the classic format, featuring familiar landmarks, modernised visuals and upgraded game pieces.
