As part of a Fox International Channels and Tencent agreement announced yesterday, starting next year, over 300 hours of programming and documentaries from National Geographic Channel will be made available online in mainland China through the video platform Tencent Video, as part of a NGC branded block.
Under the same agreement, Tencent Video and National Geographic Channel will also co-produce China-focused programs.
National Geographic Channel is jointly owned by National Geographic Ventures and FOX Entertainment Group. Tencent Video is a video streaming service available on smartphones, tablets and PCs.
“We are excited that with Tencent’s extensive and innovative network, we will be able to bring NGC content to even a wider audience in China,” Tony Qi, China territory head at FOX International Channels, said.
Meanwhile, S Y Lau, senior executive VP at Tencent and president at Tencent Online Media Group, said, introducing premium content to the China market is one of Tencent’s priorities.
“With NGC’s expertise on documentaries, we will co-develop programmes focusing on this fast-moving society,” Lau said.
