Tencent launches first data centre in Indonesia, joins slew of tech companies in Cloud race

Tencent Cloud, a subsidiary of technology conglomerate Tencent, has reportedly launched an internet data centre in Jakarta. According to The Jakarta Post, this is Tencent Cloud's first centre in Indonesia, as the company looks to capitalise on its growing cloud computing market. The internet data centre is said to allow faster data transfers and speed up various industries’ digital transformations. The Jakarta Post also cited Tencent Cloud's senior vice president Poshu Yeung, who said Indonesia has "a large internet demographic dividend with a fast-growing mobile internet market", and the company looks to maximise the cloud computing potential in the country.

The news comes a month after Microsoft said it is establishing its first data centre region in Indonesia to deliver trusted cloud services locally as well. This is under Microsoft's newly-launched Berdayakan Ekonomi Digital Indonesia (empowering Indonesia's digital economy) initiative. The data centre region will allow businesses to have faster access to Microsoft's cloud services and the ability for data to be stored in country. It is also equipped with "world-class data security and privacy", Microsoft added.

Tencent Cloud and Microsoft join the slew of technology companies that see potential in the cloud computing market in Indonesia. Alibaba Cloud is also looking to launch its third data centre in Indonesia by early 2021. According to a press release, the move is in response to the fast-growing demand from its Indonesian customers, many of whom are increasingly adopting the cloud and rapidly progressing their digital transformation strategies. Alibaba Cloud built its first data centre in Indonesia in 2018, with the second data centre constructed in 2019. Upon completion of the third, Alibaba Cloud said it will have 64 availability zones across 21 regions worldwide.

In a study done earlier this year, Alibaba said Indonesia is actively embracing the adoption of cloud-based technology, where 77% of businesses in Indonesia are currently using cloud-based IT solutions, and 83% believe that cloud-based tools help them cope with their business needs during COVID-19. Additionally, 67% of Indonesian businesses adopted more cloud-based IT solutions during the pandemic, and 64% of surveyed Indonesian businesses see hybrid cloud solutions as critical to their longevity, as a hybrid cloud approach supported them in disaster recovery and business continuity planning.

Meanwhile last June, Google Cloud also launched its first data centre in Indonesia, which is located in Jakarta. According to Google, the launch of of the data centre brings the best of Google Cloud Platform closer to its customers and users. With lower latency access to data and applications, companies doing business in Indonesia can accelerate their digital transformation with Google. It is also said to help customers meet specific regulatory and compliance requirements, and provide more disaster recovery options for customers across APAC. With this region, Google Cloud is now available in 24 regions and 73 zones across 17 countries worldwide.
