The Selangor Islamic Religious Department (JAIS) and Malaysian Islamic Development Department (Jakim) have raided a snack food packaging factory in Puchong. This was to investigate if the factory had used the halal logo without permission, NST and Bernama reported.Wan Najmiah Wan Mohamad Ali, principal assistant director of the halal management division in JAIS, added that the raid was done together with Ministry of Domestic Trade and Consumerism and the Halal Hub division in Jakim. This was following consumer consumers which doubted the authenticity of the halal status of the snacks packaged by the factory. The report added that the company did not have a Jakim halal certificate and had used the logo to dupe consumers into buying its products. Checks on the products also found that they were produced by a local company and one from China – whose halal status is undetermined. Several products were also found several to have contained gelatine. These products include sweets, preserved fruits and chocolates worth around RM14,000. The companies have also been told to stop production.A+M has reached out to JAIS on the identity of these companies. This is not the first time Jakim has targeted companies over the marketing and packaging of their products and halal concerns. In 2016, the organisation recommended for Auntie Anne’s to rename its “Pretzel Dog” to “Pretzel Sausage” after the brand stirred a online debate among Malaysians, particularly within its Muslim community. It also told consumers not to play the ‘dangerous’ Pokemon Go mobile game, just a day after the game was officially launched in the country. In April, the Malaysia government unveiled plans to allocate RM1 billion for the Halal Development Fund, in a bid to stimulate the halal industry to become the growth driver of Malaysia’s economy. The news comes as Malaysia was ranked by the Mastercard-CrescentRating Global Muslim Travel Index 2018 as the top destination for the global Muslim travel market among Organisation of Islamic Cooperation destinations.Read also:Jakim revokes Secret Recipe halal certificate over sanitary issuesJakim declares Cadbury chocolates halal(Photo courtesy: 123RF)
