Throwdowns, Call Outs, Super Crews are just some of the terms we need to familiarise ourselves with by next summer in preparation for breakdancing’s first foray into the Olympic Games.

But Olympian City is already striding ahead.

Apart of Sino Group, Olympian City hosted three qualifiers last year in partnership with the breaking division of the Hong Kong DanceSport Association (HKDSA) to seek and aid local breakers on their path to the Parisian Games.

Six members from the team have returned from a Sino-Group sponsored trip to Japan to compete in the Breaking for Gold (BfG) World Series, an international ranking competition, and an Olympic-qualifying event in Kyushu. Before the matches, the members also underwent intensive training led by B-boy Wingzero and B-boy Ryo-Flow, members of Found Nation – one of Japan’s most famous breakdance crews and the first Japanese crew to become the champion of Freestyle Session back in 2016.

B-boy Fishball, chairman of the HKDSA’s breaking division and an internationally accredited breaking judge, said such international exposure is paramount for the team’s development.

“This is the first time for the Hong Kong Breaking Team to go overseas for training and competition after its formation. The intensive training is a great way to help the team improve their skills within a short time,” he said. “We are grateful to Sino Group for giving us this invaluable opportunity and for its strong backing.”

Andrea Leung, group general manager – marketing at Sino Group, said, “Sino Group has the pleasure to contribute to Hong Kong’s ascension to the international breaking arena. We give our full support to the Hong Kong Breaking Team and provide resources on various fronts to help the team’s members unleash their potential and strive towards Paris 2024. At the same time, we are dedicated to promoting the development of breaking and succession of talents in Hong Kong.”

Seeing the success of the 2022 Hong Kong Breaking Team, Sino Group and Olympian City will replicate the qualifier events to seek the 2023 team this year. In addition to battles among local contestants, B-boy Physicx from Korea, who is hailed as one of the best b-boys in the world for his distinctive, extraordinary creativity, will be showing his moves to at the events. To inspire the younger generation of breakers, B-boy Physicx will also act as instructor at workshops organised by Olympian City.

As the first and only shopping mall to host qualifiers in partnership with HKSDA’s Breaking Division, Olympian City also took the opportunity to feature, alongside the qualifiers, public and media workshops designed to showcase that breakdancing is not just an underground pastime. The three qualifiers last year were also complemented by digital pushes such as video tutorials as well as KOL and celebrity social competitions; while mall-goers were encouraged to cheer on the dancers on event day via on-site dance performances, a 430” Mega LED screen tailored for breaking judging and more.
