Festive lights shine brighter than ever in Singtel's new Deepavali film

Singtel has unveiled a short new Deepavali film titled "Lights out" to celebrate the power of community and shared experiences. The film highlights how neighbours can become treasured friends and adds a deeper meaning to the festivities.

The story follows Uncle Raju, a familiar face from Singtel's "Hello Possibilities" campaign, as he struggles to fix his faulty lights before Deepavali. His neighbours Divya and Charles promptly step in to help and together, manage to find a suitable solution to bring the festive cheer back into Uncle Raju’s home.

The 86-second film employs a variety of colour, audio, and camera techniques to convey the various emotions felt by the characters as the story evolves. On the night of Uncle Raju’s predicament, the setting is dark and bleak, reflecting his mood and disappointment at the prospect of a ruined Deepavali celebration.

This is reinforced when his problem is first introduced to viewers using a low camera angle accompanied by the rumbling of thunder and creaking of the door – ominous signs of trouble.

Things take a turn the moment Divya and Charles step in to help, with the background music and tempo building up. When his lights are restored, the mood is instantly uplifted, and the scene transitions to bright, vibrant and lively festivities with joyful music. Uncle Raju shares the moment with his social media followers, spotlighting his friends who came to his rescue.

“'Lights Out' is more than just a festive film – it’s a reminder of the invaluable connections we build with the people around us. Through Raju’s journey, we’re able to showcase neighbourliness and the spirit of helping one another, values which Singtel fosters through our customer interactions and the services we deliver to enhance their lives. We hope this story brings a smile to everyone and reminds them of the simple joys and bonds that make every day brighter," said Anna Yip, deputy CEO Singtel Singapore and CEO business development Singtel.

"Lights out" will be available on Singtel's social media channels including Instagram, YouTube and TikTok, it said.

The film also made references to previous "Hello Possibilities" campaign, such as the mention of characters Bee and Vanessa attending Deepavali celebrations for the first time. Bee and Vanessa first appeared in a Father's Day film titled "First Father's Day".

The film, released in June this year, celebrates loving father figures, whether by blood or by bond.

The film starts with a young woman named Vanessa introducing viewers to an influencer known as Uncle Raju. While Vanessa narrates the film, Uncle Raju is seen carrying items in and out of Vanessa and her mother Bee's house, fixing the lightbulb and telling jokes.

In the next scene, Uncle Raju asks Bee if Vanessa would like the bracelet he's purchased for her. Vanessa is later seen asking Bee when she is coming back and if Uncle Raju will be with her.

When Bee and Uncle Raju return, a Father's Day dinner awaits them. Bee goes on to tell Uncle Raju that Vanessa doesn't cook for anyone except family. Uncle Raju takes a seat at the dinner table and notices that Vanessa is wearing the bracelet he's bought her.

Uncle Raju thanks Vanessa and whips out his phone to do a livestream with his followers. He tells them that it's his first Father's Day. The film ends with a text that reads, "Hello Dad's Day, Hello possibilities."
