Saicho makes travel retail debut with HKIA pop-up launch

Hong Kong-British sparkling tea brand Saicho is set to open its first-ever pop-up store at Hong Kong International Airport (HKIA) on 15 August 2026, marking a significant homecoming and its debut in travel retail.

Located at Terminal 1 (Unit 7E151B, East Hall, Level 7), the pop-up will feature an exclusive limited-edition gifting series created in collaboration with artist Jonathan Jay Lee. The partnership spans Saicho’s three single-origin expressions - Hojicha, Darjeeling, and Jasmine - packaged in bespoke boxes that draw on Lee’s distinctive visual language of Hong Kong.

At the core of the collaboration is Saicho’s signature bird motif, reinterpreted across each variety to feature bird species native to the respective tea’s origin set against layered, atmospheric Hong Kong skylines. The artwork traces a narrative progression from stillness to flight across the three boxes, symbolising the brand's growth trajectory.

A spokesperson for Saicho described the HKIA launch as a natural milestone rooted in the brand's British-Hong Kong heritage. Positioned in one of the world's busiest travel hubs, the location serves as a strategic gateway to reach global, design-led travelers during key gifting windows, including the upcoming autumn season.

Beyond driving immediate retail presence, the pop-up acts as a strategic springboard for Saicho’s broader expansion across the Asia-Pacific region. The physical footprint aims to build regional credibility and pave the way for future listings in major airport lounges, inflight dining programmes, and duty-free networks across Southeast Asia, East Asia, and Australasia.

Designed as an immersive sensory experience, the space features a tasting bar where travelers can sample single-origin sparkling teas alongside natural leaf aromas and visual art displays. Visitors can also purchase travel-ready keepsakes, such as branded bottle stoppers and luggage tags.

To support the launch, Saicho is executing an integrated marketing campaign spanning earned media, PR and KOL engagements, targeted Xiaohongshu and Instagram content, and partner tie-ins—including a cross-promotional mooncake collaboration with Island Shangri-La. Success will be evaluated through a blend of commercial and brand equity metrics, including footfall, sample-to-purchase conversion, social engagement, and loyalty programme sign-ups.

Natalie Chiu, co-founder of Saicho, said: "HKIA is the perfect first home for Saicho and an exciting milestone for the brand. We wanted to create a space for discovery, where travellers from around the world can pause, taste something memorable, and find their own reason to celebrate. Hong Kong, with all its energy, is the perfect place to bring that to life."

Charlie Winkworth-Smith, co-founder of Saicho, added: "Opening our first pop-up at HKIA is a real moment of celebration for us. It is a chance to share single origin sparkling tea with a global audience in one of the world's most dynamic cities, and it marks the start of our wider journey in travel retail across Asia-Pacific."
