PropertyGuru launches verified badge to boost trust and safety in Malaysia’s property market

PropertyGuru Malaysia has rolled out its PropertyGuru verified badge, a new feature designed to help property seekers easily identify licensed agents and negotiators on its platform.

Backed by the Royal Malaysia Police (PDRM), Malaysian Institute of Estate Agents (MIEA) and the Institute of Malaysian Property Agents & Consultants (IMPAC), the initiative introduces an enhanced verification process aimed at improving transparency and reducing property-related scams.

PropertyGuru launched its verified badge with a brand video featuring a playful twist. The spot shows a young woman introducing a young man to her parents. What starts as a typical parent-boyfriend interrogation quickly shifts when it’s revealed that the guest, Daniel, is actually a property agent. After a round of skeptical questions, Daniel confidently flashes his real estate tag and Verified Badge to win their approval.

According to the Board of Valuers, Appraisers, Estate Agents and Property Managers (LPPEH), more than 1,500 victims lost nearly RM60 million to unlicensed individuals between 2019 and 2023. The badge aims to address this by allowing users to quickly verify agents who have completed the platform’s multi-step verification process, which includes identity checks through eKYC, licence validation, and contact confirmation.

“Buying or renting a home is one of the biggest financial commitments a person will make, and that decision must start with trust,” said Kenneth Soh, country manager of PropertyGuru and iProperty Malaysia. “The verified badge gives property seekers a clear, additional way to identify licensed agents, while rewarding professionals who uphold transparency.”

For consumers, the badge provides a visual marker of trust when browsing agent profiles and listings. For agents and negotiators, it enhances visibility and credibility, helping them stand out in searches and build stronger connections with potential clients.

Industry leaders have also expressed support for the feature. PDRM’s criminal investigation head for Kuala Lumpur, YDH SAC Mohd Razali bin Mohd Idrus, noted that scams have become more sophisticated, often involving impersonation of licensed professionals, while MIEA president Kelvin Yip highlighted the badge as a tool to uphold professionalism within the industry.

Earlier this month, in line with Merdeka and Malaysia Day celebrations, PropertyGuru Malaysia launched the "Everyone welcome" tag, a voluntary label that lets landlords and agents flag their rental listings as openly inclusive. This means no discrimination on race, religion, gender, or background, giving renters an easy way to find fair housing options.

The feature is integrated into PropertyGuru’s platform with safeguards including listing guidelines and mechanisms to report discriminatory, duplicate, or fake listings. According to the company, as of August 2025, 10% of active rental listings carry the tag, while 2.62% of renters use the filter during their search.
