PHD China names Joey Zhao as CEO

PHD China has promoted Joey Zhao to CEO.

Prior to this elevation, Zhao was PHD China’s chief operating officer where he was instrumental in driving growth, operational efficiency and business transformation of the agency in China, culminating in PHD China clinching the media business for SAIC Volkswagen at the end of last year.

Possessing more than 15 years of management experience in a variety of industries and categories, Zhao honed his business acumen having worked for the Shanghai government, Shanghai Media Group, and blue-chip multinational companies, consultancies and law firms in China. Prior to joining PHD China as chief operating officer, Zhao was a partner at an investment group with a focus on marketing technology for China’s advertising, media, and communications industries.

“I am humbled by this promotion and by the same token, excited to lead the talented team here at PHD China. I am very much looking forward to leveraging my experience and helping our clients make the leap in a rapidly changing business landscape," said Zhao.

Zhao is based in Shanghai and reports into Claudine Kwek, CEO of Omnicom Media Group China. Meanwhile, Zhao is replacing former PHD China CEO Anna Chitty as the news of her departure was announced in September 2020.

Speaking on Zhao's appointment, Kwek said, “He brings a refreshed mindset and a bold ambition to PHD China. Coupled with his diverse experience, he is well-placed to strengthen and optimise PHD China’s client-focused operating model, delivering incremental value for both our clients and the agency. With Zhao at the helm, I’m confident PHD China will unlock new opportunities and build upon the momentum of our business in China.”

James Hawkins, CEO of PHD APAC, also commented, “Zhao's extensive experience across multiple industries, coupled with his knowledge of local market dynamics and culture, makes him an incredible source of inspiration for both our clients and our people. Given his tenacity and leadership, I am excited to have Joey onboard as we continue to chart the success of PHD China and our clients in one of the most dynamic markets in the world."
