Malaysian national news agency, Bernama, has appointed Nur-ul Afida Kamaludin (pictured left) and Arul Rajoo Durar Dar (pictured right) as its new deputy editors-in-chief.

The news was announced by Bernama’s CEO, Roslan Ariffin, and was confirmed on its site.

Nur-ul Afida will be stepping into the role of the news agency’s first female deputy editor-in-chief of Economic News Service.

She has been with Bernama for 38 years, having commenced her tenure in 1985, where she worked in various departments and units including the general news desk, the Malay sub desk, the photo unit and the features and strategic writing desk, in addition to being a teaching staff of the Bernama School of Journalism since 2009.

Her last designation at Bernama was as head of strategic planning.

According to the agency, in her new role, she hopes to strengthen the position of the news service as a trusted channel of news and information for the people and simultaneously guide journalists to make objective and fair news reporting as dictated in the Bernama Act of 1967.

Nur-ul Afida added that in today’s digital age, accurate reporting is paramount, and for the government to convey its messages accurately. Combatting fake news, according to her, is the first task on her agenda as deputy editor-in-chief.

Durar Dar on the other hand has been at Bernama since 1991, as gleaned from his LinkedIn profile. He commenced his journey at Bernama as sports desk chief, a position in which he stayed for over seven years. He then took on the role of bureau chief for Bernama Perak in 2005, as a correspondent in Bangkok, a position which he hopes will contribute to his current role.

After his role as correspondent, he became editor of Bernama News Service in 2010 before taking on the appointment of assignment editor of Bernama TV and then head of broadcasting in 2022.

He added that he will work with his team to gain more exclusive stories, while focusing on the agency's interdepartmental programmes' greater involvement of other platforms such as Bernama TV, Radio and digital platforms and its international partners.
