McCann Worldgroup nabs Nike marketing chief to lead global creative

McCann Worldgroup has appointed Alex Lopez, Nike VP, global marketing, men's creative director, as its president and global CCO. The appointment is part of McCann Worldgroup’s expansion of how creativity works across every level of the network’s global business operations. Bill Kolb, chairman and CEO of McCann Worldgroup, said that bringing Lopez on board will allow it to redefine the role of global CCO and set it on a path to help its network and clients plan an even greater creative future for their brands and businesses. “We are looking at a broader future and what it means for us to be a leader in the business of creativity,” he said.

During his time at Nike, Lopez defined, differentiated and activated consumer engagement for the Nike brand, shaping its positioning and messaging, driving enterprise-wide alignment, and leading teams around the world to best-in-class execution, for over 20 years. He also worked at the leading edge of evolving how Nike connects with consumers both at scale and on an individual basis, through traditional channels, existing digital channels and the latest, emerging technologies and platforms. 

Some of the noteworthy campaigns Lopez led in Nike include the “Dream Crazy,” “Equality,” and “You Can’t Stop Us”. He also led efforts to launch new sports categories that include Nike Skateboarding, the brand’s launch into Digital Sport via the Fuel Band, and its entry into premium long-form entertainment by co-founding and leading Waffle Iron Entertainment.

Lopez has worked across a portfolio of brands within Nike and oversaw a diverse set of disciplines, such as advertising and brand communication, social media, media planning and buying, digital brand innovation, events and more, at the global level and across several of its geographies and territories across the world. He is also co-founder and global head of studio at Waffle Iron Entertainment. 

Lopez said that he sees a tremendous opportunity to not only partner with the incredible creative talent in place globally across the agencies but to help lead McCann Worldgroup to be the most important partner to its clients and relentlessly pursue creativity based on a holistic and strategic understanding of their clients' businesses.

Earlier in July, McCann reshuffled its leadership, appointing Asia Pacific president Alex Lubar to lead North America as president. He is succeeded by Ghassan Harfouche, group CEO of the Middle East Communications Network (MCN), McCann Worldgroup’s and Interpublic Group’s partner network in the Middle East, North Africa and Turkey. At the same time, APAC CFO and representative director of McCann Worldgroup Japan, Ji Watson, has been named CEO of McCann Worldgroup Japan. McCann China has also named Yinbo Ma as its CCO.
