Mamee Monster and ZUS COFFEE find their perfect Merdeka match

Mamee Monster and ZUS COFFEE find their perfect Merdeka match

Mamee Monster and ZUS COFFEE are celebrating Malaysia's differences this Merdeka with "Lain Tapi NGAM", a new collaboration bringing the two homegrown brands together across limited-edition drinks, snacks, merchandise and a dual-drink cup.

The collaboration follows a playful social media rivalry between the brands' respective mascots, Mamee Monster's Monster and ZUS COFFEE's Blue Buddy, which have been trading jabs over whose store rules Jonker Street. The online back-and-forth has now evolved into a wider Merdeka campaign centred on the idea that seemingly different personalities, tastes and routines can still make a fitting match.

At the heart of "Lain Tapi NGAM", which loosely translates to "different but compatible", is a series of product crossovers tapping into familiar Malaysian flavours, nostalgia and the visual identities of both brands.

Mamee Monster is introducing a limited-edition nasi lemak flavour inspired by the Malaysian staple, available exclusively in its Mamee Monster x ZUS COFFEE 10-pack. The packs will come in four collectible collaboration designs and give consumers the chance to win a range of prizes.

Meanwhile, ZUS COFFEE is giving its menu a blue makeover with three Mamee Monster-inspired beverages: 'Blue ocean soda', 'Berry blue chocolate' and 'Velvet blue smoothie'. The drinks use natural blue spirulina alongside a mixed berry base of apple, strawberry and cranberry, with elderflower notes.

The drinks will be available across ZUS COFFEE outlets nationwide from 17 August to 16 September.

The collaboration also introduces the "Lain Tapi NGAM" dual cup, which serves two different beverages side by side in a single cup. Available for a limited time at selected outlets, customers can pair 'Blue ocean soda' with either an 'Iced Spanish latte' or 'Pink lemonade', bringing the campaign's idea of two different things working together to life.

The collaboration also extends into merchandise, with a collection spanning two ZUS Chubee tumbler designs, a cup sleeve, Chubitz, a stainless steel Frozee, a two-in-one pouch, mid-crew socks and a limited-edition plushie gift box.

Through the tie-up, the brands are tapping into Malaysia's Merdeka period to position their contrasting identities as a reflection of the country's wider diversity, using the campaign's "Lain Tapi NGAM" message to celebrate the idea of different tastes and personalities coming together.

"Mamee Monster has always been about bringing fun, flavour, and a little bit of mischief into everyday snacking," said How Yuan Yi, chief marketing officer at Mamee-Double Decker.

She added, "With ZUS COFFEE, we saw an opportunity to create something truly Malaysian — a collaboration that may look unexpected at first, but makes complete sense once Malaysians experience it. 'Lain Tapi NGAM' captures exactly that feeling: different brands, different personalities, but one shared love for bold local flavour and joyful moments."

In tandem, Jennifer Sim, head of marketing, Malaysia and Singapore, at ZUS COFFEE said, "Being a brand made in Malaysia, ZUS believes quality beverages should be part of Malaysians’ everyday lives — accessible, familiar, and always evolving with local tastes because communities is where innovation lives."

"This collaboration with Mamee Monster allows us to celebrate Malaysia in a fun and unexpected way, while bringing together two brands that Malaysians know, love, and connect with in different parts of their day. It is a partnership that reflects the diversity, creativity, and shared sense of humour that make Malaysia so special," she added.

The tie-up comes as brands across Malaysia lean into homegrown culture, flavours and characters to connect with consumers during this year's Merdeka season.

Earlier this month, Luckin Coffee Malaysia teamed up with homegrown adult animation series Kisah Bawah Tanah for "Rasa kita, cerita kita" ('Our flavours, our stories'), a Merdeka campaign combining Malaysian-inspired coffee creations, original animated content and limited-edition merchandise. The campaign rolled out nationwide on 14 August and will run across August and September.

Baskin-Robbins Malaysia has similarly tapped a familiar local IP, partnering with animated characters Upin & Ipin for "Eksplorasi aiskrim Upin & Ipin" ('Upin & Ipin ice cream adventure'). The limited-time Merdeka campaign brings together co-branded menu items, themed retail environments and in-store activations aimed at encouraging flavour discovery and shared family experiences.
