LinkedIn has identified PETRONAS as the best workplace to work for in Malaysia, retaining its place from last year's list. The ranking is part of LinkedIn's Top Companies list which identified 15 of the best workplaces in Malaysia for employees to grow their careers.

The companies were ranked based on LinkedIn's unique data. This data was measured across seven key pillars that contribute to career progression: ability to advance, skills growth, company stability, external opportunity, company affinity, gender diversity and spread of educational backgrounds.

LinkedIn outlined PETRONAS’ commitment to upskilling its employees across the rapidly changing business environment as a contributing factor. PETRONAS has also helped its employees by establishing various institutions and technology centres that offer specific expertise to support technology and stability.

In addition to PETRONAS, six other state-owned companies made the list, including new entrants Maxis and RHB Banking Group. Of the seven local companies ranked in 2022, three are government-linked companies, along with one government-linked investment company: PETRONAS, Maybank (#2), Tenaga Nasional (#11) and Permodalan Nasional (#4). The seven companies are among the biggest employers in the country and continue to hire a range of talent, from entry to senior level, as well as offering internships and training programmes.

Here is the list of companies in Malaysia that have the best workplaces:

  1. PETRONAS
  2. Maybank
  3. Bosch
  4. Permodalan Nasional
  5. B. Braun Group
  6. Standard Chartered Bank
  7. Prudential plc
  8. Intel
  9. Shell
  10. IBM
  11. Tenaga Nasional
  12. Maxis
  13. RHB Banking Group
  14. Hong Leong Bank
  15. OCBC Bank

Second-ranked Maybank has also made efforts towards employee empowerment by introducing the “Workplace Enablers” programme that focuses on upskilling non-clerical employees to enable them to advance in their professions and take on greater responsibilities.

Other overall key trends identified by LinkedIn include flexible work arrangements and more efforts to make the workforce more equal. LinkedIn also outlined a key factor being companies’ ability to accommodate flexible work arrangements. Maybank, for example, introduced a hybrid working environment, which enables employees to have access to hot-desking and collaborative meeting rooms. Additionally, during the pandemic, Permodalan Nasional started new flexi-work arrangements, allowing some 1,750 employees to work from home.

Diversity was another aspect LinkedIn looked at, where MNCs Bosch and B.Braun Group were highlighted. According to LinkedIn, Bosch has a reputation for a balanced working environment and practices diversity and inclusions, such as the "SAFEteam – enabling high-performance teams" that support executives and employees to establish a culture of trust within teams. As for the latter, through the global initiative 4Diversity, B.Braun Group has focused on raising awareness of opportunities for equal career advancement. The company is also investing resources in increasing the number of female managers internally, to reflect equal representations at all levels of management.
