Lan Kwai Fong is gearing up for a massive district-wide transformation, turning its iconic nightlife streets into a six-week football carnival for the FIFA World Cup 2026.

According to HK01 and The Standard, the Lan Kwai Fong Association has teamed up with official tournament broadcaster Now TV and over 20 local restaurants, bars, and entertainment venues to deliver the tournament's electric atmosphere to the heart of the city.

The carnival will run from 11 June to 20 July, the day of the final match, taking over key streets including D'Aguilar Street, Lan Kwai Fong, and On Lan Street. It is split into two main phases. The first phase, running until 17 July, will feature warm-up activities and special themed photo spots placed around the district.

For the final weekend of the tournament, designated road sections will be completely closed off to create an open-air fan zone. This weekend will feature live freestyle football performances, pop-up food and drink stalls, and interactive game booths.

Lan Kwai Fong Group’s chairman, Allan Zeman, shared the district's ambition to transform its iconic party streets into a massive open-air stadium, according to reports. Large screens will be installed for live match broadcasts, bringing locals and international visitors together to enjoy the global sporting event. The area is suitable for hosting such large-scale sports celebrations due to its central location and non-stop international foot traffic.

As the tournament will reach its climax from 18 to 20 July, the final phase will turn designated streets into World Cup fan zones, with freestyle football performances, food and drink stalls, and interactive game booths.

According to the reports, Bruce Lam, chief executive officer, consumer, HKT, said the company started preparing the large TV screens a month ago. He described this World Cup as the "ultimate final" for many football legends, calling it a "once-in-a-lifetime" event. He believes the atmosphere before the tournament is already great, and the number of partners has grown, including restaurants and gyms.

Lam also described Lan Kwai Fong as an international landmark that never sleeps, and hoped the six-week tournament will help change Hong Kong people's daily habits and give a boost to the night-time economy. He added that this year's event includes several highlights, such as an "AI波友” app that lets fans find places to watch matches and get AI-generated score predictions.

Meanwhile, Zeman said 80,000 people visited Lan Kwai Fong during the last World Cup final, according to the report. While it is difficult to estimate this year's visitor numbers and profits, he believes the event will attract many football fans as well as mainland Chinese and international tourists. As for the matches kicking off at 3 am, he believes fans won't mind the time and will still stay late into the night to support their teams and celebrate victories.
