Hong Kong's public cyber safety initiative, CyberDefender (守網者), has tapped international star Jackson Wang to lead its latest anti-scam campaign to boost public awareness of online scams.

A Hong Kong-born singer and rapper, Wang first gained recognition as a member of the K-pop group GOT7, which debuted in 2014. Since then, he has built a solo career with his own music releases and has become a well-known public figure in both Asia and internationally.

On Thursday (7 July), CyberDefender posted a teaser on its social media pages featuring Wang. The teaser introduced the campaign's tagline: "AI護航 智破騙案". In the video, Wang appeared alongside Meter, the mascot of CyberDefender's Scameter (防騙視伏器) anti-scam app app. Together, they highlighted the app's built-in AI features, which are designed to help the public identify fraud and scams more effectively.

The teaser has also tapped into Wang's popularity to highlight the app's upgraded AI-driven protection. Key new features include automatic database updates, easy cross-platform reporting (with one-click reporting on iOS), AI-powered early warnings for fraudulent websites, and a daily ranking of the latest scams with safety alerts sent directly to users.

Several netizens said they were surprised to learn that Jackson Wang is the new ambassador for the Scameter app, and some added that they have since downloaded the app after finding out about the partnership, MARKETING-INTERACTIVE confirmed.

The full 30-second ad is released today and will air on TV and outdoor screens across Hong Kong, kicking off a large-scale promotional push. CyberDefender has also encouraged citizens to take a photo whenever they spot the outdoor ad featuring Jackson Wang, as part of the collective effort to take action against fraud.

Before Jackson Wang, actor and singer Aaron Kwok was tapped by Hong Kong police as the spokesperson for the "Scameter+" anti-scam app. In February 2024, he starred in an official campaign video encouraging the public to download the app and stay vigilant against online fraud.

The campaign, part of the "All-round CyberDefence" initiative, encouraged citizens to download the app and stay alert against increasingly sophisticated online fraud tactics . Kwok's involvement brought significant star power to the anti-scam effort, as authorities sought to leverage his widespread recognition to reach a broader audience and reinforce the message of community-wide vigilance against digital deception.
