Island Shangri-La taps TCM wisdom to redefine modern longevity

Island Shangri-La has introduced traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) principles as the functional framework for YUN WELLNESS, positioning the sanctuary as a global leader in the holistic integration of wellness, energy alignment, and vitality-building.

The name “YUN” () remains the guiding philosophy of the brand, rooted in a Chinese character that carries rich meaning by suggesting something latent and deep. This identity was inspired by a classical poem that extols the beauty of nature, ultimately leading to the realisation that to live well is to live long.

In this same spirit, YUN WELLNESS seeks to revitalise both the body and mind by channeling the soothing power of nature and offering therapies that are deeply rooted in the TCM principle that true longevity arises from harmony—of Qi, of internal body systems, and of emotional and physical balance.

As a 5,000-year-old system of health that views the human body as an interconnected ecosystem, TCM treats the whole person rather than focusing on isolated symptoms. The practice centers on Qi, the vital life force that flows through the body’s meridians, and utilises various modalities such as meridian work, fascia release, Tai Chi, breathwork, and energy practices to restore energetic harmony. When Qi flows freely and remains in balance, the body stays healthy and resilient; however, when it is blocked, depleted, or disrupted, illness and fatigue inevitably follow.

At YUN WELLNESS, TCM stands as one of Island Shangri-La’s key wellness pillars, shaping how the center understands movement, energy, and recovery. By applying these principles as a functional framework for modern wellbeing, YUN supports balance, circulation, and regulation in everyday life.

Wellness is therefore viewed not as a single treatment but as a lifelong practice. The YUN WELLNESS membership programme reinforces this idea through its state-of-the-art facilities, personalised relationships with expert practitioners, and a year-round series featuring visiting masters. This comprehensive approach is designed to build resilience and longevity into the lives of every guest.

Throughout Hong Kong and across Asia, TCM is woven into the rhythm of modern living, found in markets fragrant with dried herbs, local clinics tucked between narrow alleys, and the quiet devotion of Tai Chi practiced in public parks. It lives in the DNA of the city as a tradition that is simultaneously ancient and profoundly relevant to the pressures of contemporary life.

By placing TCM at its core, YUN WELLNESS aims to position itself as the natural leader in Asia for inspired wellness, reflecting the region’s heritage and lived experience through masterclasses that bring the best of international energy healing to Hong Kong.

Beyond its resident experts, the center welcomes a rotating programme of distinguished visiting practitioners who specialise in disciplines such as Qi Gong and sound healing. This Master series is part of the upcoming Global Wellness Day celebration on 13 June, which features a programme designed to restore balance, cultivate joy, and support holistic wellbeing.

One of the masters is Budiman Handjaja, a prominent energy healer and Qi cultivation expert known for integrating classical Chinese energy work with modern somatic awareness. The sessions focus on restoring energetic flow, emotional grounding and deep vitality. At YUN WELLNESS, he will lead a flagship programme of energy-healing retreats and individual sessions and anchor the inaugural Masters Series.

Guests joining the celebration can experience poolside yoga, somatic movement dance, and a structural awareness workshop led by osteopath and rehabilitation specialist Hugo. The lineup also includes personalised wellness consultations, meridian-focused massage trials, and a Reset Breathwork and Sound session.

These offerings reflect YUN’s philosophy of harmonising the body, mind, and energy, inviting the community to explore mindful restoration and the foundations of long-term vitality.
