Indonesia positions MPL as cultural export platform with new IP integration drive

Indonesia is positioning the Mobile Legends: Bang Bang Professional League (MPL) Indonesia as a cultural export platform, integrating local IPs into eSports as developer MOONTON Games reframes the league as a “creative playground”.

The move was formalised through an agreement between MOONTON Games and IP entertainment company Tale X, supported by the ministry of creative economy. It positions MPL Indonesia as a platform where local IPs can be developed and distributed to mass global audiences.

At the core of the strategy is the integration of six Indonesian-developed IPs into the MLBB eSports ecosystem – marking the first time such a structured framework has been introduced to bridge creative production with large-scale exposure.

Irene Umar, deputy minister of creative economy, pointed to M7 – the recently concluded MLBB World Championship 2026 – as proof that traditional cultural performances can intersect meaningfully with gaming, adding that the “creative playground” designation marks a concrete step to drive collaboration.

Joshua Budiman, co-founder and director of Tale X, framed the partnership as a commercial and cultural multiplier. “MPL Indonesia is not just a league. It is an ecosystem that connects gaming with our local creative economy. Through this collaboration, our local IPs are not only showcased but streamed to mass audiences across the world, creating real value across content, brands, and commercial partnerships.”

Beyond IP development, the announcement also underscored Indonesia’s ambition to strengthen its position in global eSports competition.

Pengurus Besar Esports Indonesia (PB ESI) revealed the newly appointed coach for the national MLBB team, Kenny “Xepher” Deo, ahead of the Esports Nations Cup 2026 and the Asian Games 2026, alongside a renewed commitment with MOONTON Games to build a more structured national team programme.

“Our goal is not just to participate, but to perform,” said Glorya Famiela Ralahalo, national teams manager, PB ESI. “Together with MOONTON Games, we are building a system that supports our players with the right structure, preparation, and experience so that Indonesia can deliver strong results and represent the nation with pride on the world stage.”

MPL Indonesia’s evolution is also being expressed through its live experience. Season 17 playoffs will return to the Jakarta International Velodrome, a venue that has become synonymous with large-scale eSports in the country.

The upcoming playoffs will feature expanded on-ground activations, including live entertainment and community-driven programming aimed at deepening fan engagement.

“Over the past decade, MPL Indonesia has grown into more than a competition. It is a platform that connects millions of Indonesians,” said Martinus H. Manurung, head of eSports business development, MOONTON Indonesia. “Our role now is to ensure that this scale creates real impact, by supporting local creators, strengthening our national teams, and working with partners to position Indonesia as a leader in global eSports.”

By embedding local IP into gameplay, broadcasts, and live events, brands and creators gain access to a highly engaged, youth-skewing audience at scale – while also tapping into national identity and cultural storytelling.
