Eligible citizens in Hong Kong will receive the first batch of consumption vouchers worth HK$5,000 tomorrow. To tap into the opportunities offered by the scheme, IKEA Hong Kong has added WeChat Pay HK to one of its payment solutions, allowing customers to use the mobile wallet to pay at the stores, on its online platform and on the app.

Tencent's vice president of financial technology Daniel Hong said the collaboration allows IKEA Hong Kong's customers to use WeChat Pay HK to shop online with greater convenience. Moving forward, WeChat Pay HK will expand its footprint by working with different types of clients, spurring the development of ePayment in Hong Kong.

According to information on IKEA Hong Kong's website, the company allows customers to use credit cards issued by Visa and Mastercard, HSBC's eWallet PayMe and WeChat Pay HK to pay. MARKETING-INTERACTIVE has reached out to IKEA Hong Kong for more details.

The Hong Kong government will disburse the consumption vouchers to more than 6.3 million eligible citizens on 7 April. Citizens who are using accounts of AlipayHK, Tap & Go or WeChat Pay HK for receiving vouchers last year will be disbursed with a HK$5,000 voucher. The vouchers can be used until 31 October.

WeChat Pay HK has been working with various merchants in Hong Kong to expand its footprint in the city. Last year, it worked with Hong Kong Disneyland Resort to launch exclusive promotions for WeChat Pay HK users. Users choosing WeChat Pay HK to receive the vouchers can enjoy a series of perks, including an in-room decoration worth HK$499, a HK$90 discount on a ticket, and a gift after spending a certain amount of money.

Meanwhile, eligible users can use their WeChat accounts to scan the QR Code via the government's consumption voucher website at Hong Kong Disneyland to register for the scheme to enjoy an extra HK$40 rewards.

Moreover, according to the Hong Kong government, 70% of 6.3 million qualified residents chose Octopus to collect the consumption vouchers last year, 20% of eligible registrants of the consumption voucher scheme opted for AlipayHK, with other users spread between Tap & Go and WeChat Pay HK. The four platforms were the mandated payment service providers for the Hong Kong government’s HK$36 billion consumption voucher scheme last year, aimed at boosting the local economy amid the COVID-19 pandemic. All four service providers continue their services in this year's consumption voucher scheme.
