How HABIB Jewels is weaving cultural pride into wearable heritage

How HABIB Jewels is weaving cultural pride into wearable heritage

HABIB Jewels is celebrating Merdeka with a month-long campaign that pays tribute to Malaysia's cultural heritage through a new jewellery collection and a series of commemorative gold wafers.

Running from 1 to 31 August across all HABIB showrooms nationwide, the campaign centres on the themes of unity, togetherness and national pride, highlighting cultural elements from across the country through contemporary jewellery design.

In conversation with A+M, a HABIB spokesperson said the campaign aims to celebrate Malaysia's cultural heritage in a way that resonates with modern consumers while reinforcing the jeweller's identity as a homegrown Malaysian brand.

Rather than treating Merdeka as solely a commemorative occasion, the campaign encourages Malaysians to reconnect with the stories, traditions and artistry that have shaped the nation's identity. According to the spokesperson, it is designed to resonate with a broad audience, from existing customers and younger consumers seeking meaningful jewellery to gold wafer collectors and those who appreciate locally inspired craftsmanship.

Leading the campaign is the new 'Tengkolok' ('traditional headgear') collection, a range of rings and bangles inspired by the "Dendam tak sudah" tengkolok folding style from Negeri Sembilan, famously worn by Malaysia's first prime minister, Tunku Abdul Rahman Putra Al-Haj, during the country's declaration of independence.

The spokesperson said the collection was chosen as the campaign's centrepiece because the tengkolok symbolises resilience, perseverance and national pride, values that continue to resonate across generations. Through asymmetrical silhouettes, textured geometric detailing and diamond embellishments, the collection reinterprets the traditional headpiece using contemporary craftsmanship.

Complementing the jewellery line is the "MY corak 999.9 gold wafer" collection, which celebrates the distinct cultural identities of Malaysia's Northern, Southern, Central, East Coast and East Malaysia regions.

Each wafer features illustrations inspired by regional landmarks, flora, fauna, traditional motifs and cultural symbols. Available individually or as a five-piece set, the collection is housed in batik-inspired packaging that reflects Malaysia's artistic traditions.

According to the spokesperson, the "MY corak" collection also serves an educational purpose by encouraging greater appreciation of Malaysia's history, traditions and cultural diversity through recognisable cultural and national symbols.

Beyond the collections, HABIB is supporting the initiative through an integrated marketing strategy spanning both physical and digital channels. Customers can explore the collections through themed visual merchandising and storytelling at all HABIB showrooms nationwide, while the brand's social media platforms will feature educational content on the cultural inspirations behind each design.

Public relations and media engagement will further amplify the campaign throughout the Merdeka period.

The spokesperson added that the campaign is a natural extension of HABIB's long-standing commitment to celebrating Malaysian identity. It also aligns with HARTA Space, the brand's cultural initiative dedicated to preserving and promoting Malaysia's artistic traditions through a museum, gallery and public programmes.

According to the spokesperson, the long-term ambition is to create jewellery that tells uniquely Malaysian stories, strengthening HABIB's position as a brand that not only crafts fine jewellery, but also preserves the nation's cultural legacy while building deeper emotional connections with consumers.

The latest campaign builds on HABIB's efforts to broaden its brand storytelling beyond traditional jewellery collections. In May, the jeweller partnered with local animation IP Didi & Friends to launch the "HABIB x Didi & Friends storytime collection", a series of children's storybooks paired with 999.9 gold wafers.

The initiative sought to blend literacy, moral lessons and early financial awareness, reflecting the brand's strategy of connecting with younger audiences and families through culturally rooted storytelling.
