Hong Kong tourism chief Rosanna Law has revealed plans to designate Kai Tak Stadium as the regular home ground for the Hong Kong football representative team.

The announcement followed the Hong Kong,China men’s team drawing 1-1 with Bangladesh in the third round of qualifiers for the 2027 Asian Cup earlier this week. The match drew a record 45,489 fans, the highest attendance ever for a Hong Kong home game.

Law, the secretary for culture, sports and tourism, praised the team’s performance despite the draw and said .

"While it's somewhat disappointing that the Hong Kong team couldn't secure a win, we're pleased with the 1-1 result. I'm very happy to see all our players giving their best today, demonstrating the spirit that the Hong Kong team embodies. Several players played the entire match without a break,” she told the press after the event.

When asked about the possibility of designating Kai Tak Stadium as the official home ground for the Hong Kong football team, Law said that the Football Association of Hong Kong China, has been in talks with Kai Tak Sports Park. The government aims to reach an agreement that will support the Hong Kong football, including the city's premier league.

While she said stadium issues like restrictions on the use of drums and loudspeakers had been a challenge, she said local teams were bullish on the idea.

“Now, as we can see, fans enjoy the atmosphere in addition to watching good matches, and we believe this is very positive. We encourage fans to support our team more actively, so this month, those related restrictions have been relaxed,” Law said.

She added that the government would continuye to support Hong Kong football, expressing hope that the local team can secure a victory in their upcoming home match against Singapore. She also thanked fans for their ongoing vocal support during the lengthy match.

This push to elevate Hong Kong football follows the government's recent overhaul of the “M” Mark System for major sports events in August. The new framework introduces stricter vetting to prioritise world-class open competitions over age-group or exhibition matches.

Funding for new events will now be granted on a sliding scale, starting at HK$6 million in the first year and decreasing to encourage greater private sponsorship. To ensure diversity, only one top-tier event per championship series will be funded annually, and exhibition matches are now capped.
