HK couples shift spending habits ahead of Valentine’s Day

Rather than splurging on a lavish night out, about one in five Hong Kong couples now plan to celebrate Valentine’s Day with affordable short-haul trips to the mainland, a new survey reveals.
Conducted by HK Romance Dating between 15 January and 3 February, the poll surveyed 517 local couples—243 men and 274 women—on their Valentine’s Day plans.
The findings point to shifting preferences in how couples celebrate. Watching movies ranked as the top choice among men (52%), while shopping led for women (42%).
A notable emerging trend is celebrating across the border, selected by 21% of men and 23% of women. Meanwhile, the share of men opting to celebrate at home has plunged sharply—from 48% last year to just 11% this year.
Flowers remain a go-to gift for men, rising from 46% last year to 52%. Yet more than half of women (56%) said they hope to receive watches or jewellery instead. For the second year running, digital electronics top women’s wish lists (44%) and also lead among men (42%).
As for the least desired gifts, amusement park tickets were named by 52% of men, while 44% of women said they’d rather skip stationery, and 29% prefer not to receive toys or figurines.
Anita Cheung, founder of HK Romance Dating, said men still view flowers as a Valentine’s Day essential—often pairing them with another gift despite seasonal price hikes.
Co-founder Yubi Wong Ka-yu encouraged couples to take time understanding each other’s preferences and current needs, adding that personalised gifts can better convey sincerity.
