HBO GO app targets a wider audience in Indonesia

HBO's streaming app HBO GO has launched in Indonesia as a standalone service, with a seven-day free trial. In Indonesia, the app first rolled out in 2019 and was only available via Telkomsel’s video app Maxstream, First Media and IndiHome. But now, to reach a wider audience it is available to the public.

Within the app itself, the live TV function can stream six of WarnerMedia Entertainment Networks’ channels: HBO, HBO SIGNATURE, HBO HITS, HBO FAMILY, CINEMAX and RED BY HBO.

Clement Schwebig, managing director of WarnerMedia Entertainment Networks, Southeast Asia, Pacific and China said that the HBO GO app has already got off to a flying start in Indonesia, and thanked local distribution partners for that.  "Now, consumers have another method of accessing our great content with a free trial and no obligation. Through HBO GO, viewers can watch the latest Hollywood blockbuster movies and series – as well as Asian content – anytime, anywhere," he added.

In Asia, HBO GO is also available in Singapore, Malaysia, the Philippines, Vietnam, and Hong Kong. According to the company, it aims to launch in more territories and with new partners soon. HBO GO allows subscribers access to stream entertainment from Hollywood blockbusters and exclusive original content from HBO, HBO Asia and CINEMAX, and more.

This comes at a time competitor Netflix has been blocked by service providers Telkomsel, IndiHome and Wifi.id since 2016. According to The Jakarta Post, Telkom Indonesia, parent company of these brands, said that the streaming platform has “yet to fully comply” with the media content regulations in Indonesia.
