Google Cloud Indonesia paints the town in latest street-level tech showcase

Google Cloud is turning Jakarta's streets into a vibrant canvas - not just with spray cans, but also with artificial intelligence. To mark its five-year milestone in Indonesia, the company teamed up with local artists to unveil a series of AI-powered murals across the city, blending machine learning with creative expression.

Five sprawling murals now colour the streets of Jakarta - carrying the themes of growth, compassion, curiosity, connection, and harmony. They are a tribute to a rare meeting point between tradition and technology. At the centre of this effort are Herzven, Bunga Fatia, and Wastana Haikal - the artists commissioned for the project.

"At Google Cloud, we believe that AI isn't a replacement for human creativity and ingenuity; it augments and amplifies these qualities," the company told MARKETING-INTERACTIVE. "While AI itself isn't the artist, it's amazing to see how it can help bring creative visions to life."

At the recent Google Cloud Summit in Jakarta, a striking "Halo Indonesia" digital installation lit up the centre of Pacific Place Mall, while the series of murals also took centre stage at the summit venue.

"This showcase also offered attendees a hands-on creative experience, where they could create and bring home their own digital mural using an AI agent built on Google Cloud's Vertex AI platform, Gemini models, and Imagen models," the company said.

During the event, Google Cloud and the communication and digital affairs ministry (Komdigi) announced a new accelerator programme for AI-focused startups based in Indonesia. Named "Google for Startups Accelerator Southeast Asia: Indonesia, AI-Focused", the three-month initiative aims to boost local startup capabilities through world-class AI technology and training.

The programme aligns with the country's "Indonesia Emas 2045" vision, with minister Meutya Hafid highlighting the role of AI in driving inclusive, sustainable economic growth. Selected startups will gain access to up to US$350,000 in Google Cloud credits, workshops at Komdigi's digital innovation hub, and an exclusive Demo Day to pitch AI products to investors.

The first cohort - 20 startups - will begin in September 2025. Over five years, the initiative targets supporting 100 AI startups in Indonesia. Fanly Tanto, Google Cloud Indonesia's country director, noted that effective use of cloud and AI services could unlock economic value worth IDR 990 trillion (US$61 billion) by 2030.

Google Cloud said it's helping breathe new life into classic works of art and cinema through the power of AI. Back in 1937, Salvador Dalí imagined a surreal film titled Giraffes on Horseback Salad, but the project was never realised - until now. With Google Cloud's AI tools, creative teams from Goodby Silverstein & Partners and The Dalí Museum have turned Dalí's original sketches into a cinematic experience.

The company's AI is also being used to reimagine The Wizard of Oz, the 1939 classic originally shot on 35mm film. It's now being adapted for the massive, curved screen of the Las Vegas Sphere using AI techniques developed by Google. While the visuals are updated for a new format, the original dialogue and music remain untouched.

In the first quarter of 2025, Google Cloud's global revenue grew 28% year-on-year, marking its ninth consecutive profitable quarter. Adoption of Google Cloud's Vertex AI platform has surged, with five times more customers and a 20-fold increase in usage. Over the past 18 months, customers are consuming over eight times more computing capacity for AI workloads - while also benefiting from improved performance and cost-efficiency.

The momentum is playing out across industries in Indonesia. From banks and retailers to ministries and startups, Google Cloud is increasingly powering the behind-the-scenes infrastructure of daily life.
