Genshin Impact most tweeted about game in SG and MY

Genshin Impact came out on top as the most tweeted about game in Singapore and Malaysia; according to Twitter's internal data. The game was launched in September 2020 and has since earned over US$2 billion, despite criticisms over its gameplay, The Straits Times (ST) reported. While the game is free to play, the gameplay shows slow progress unless players buy upgrades with real money. Genshin Impact even left a Singaporean father facing a SG$20,000 credit card bill after his daughter used the card for 89 transactions for in-game purchases over six weeks. 

Meanwhile, Twitter was booming with gaming chatter last year, with over 2.4 billion tweets about gaming recorded - over 10 times more than in 2017. According to Twitter's global gaming data in 2021, the fourth quarter in 2021 saw the most gaming chatter on the platform. 

Maurizio Barbieri, head of sports and gaming partnerships for SEA and Greater China at Twitter, said that as people continue adjusting to life in the middle of a pandemic, they are finding new ways to make connections with various communities; and one of them is through gaming. Singapore

Joining Genshin Impact as the top three tweeted about games are PUBG and Roblox; according to Twitter's internal data. Final Fantasy, Arknights, Minecraft, Granblue Fantasy, VALORANT, Fate/Grand Order and Animal Crossing: New Horizons also made the list as the top 10 tweeted about games in Singapore.

Meanwhile, T1 topped Singapore's list as the most tweeted about esports team in the market. OG, Team Secret, Sentinels, and G2 Esports were also among the top five most tweeted about esports teams. Other teams to join the top 10 include FaZe Clan, SM FTX, Cloud 9, 100 Thieves and Fnatic; according to Twitter's internal data.

In Malaysia, in addition to Genshin ImpactKena: Bridge of Spirits and Roblox were also highly raved about on Twitter; according to Twitter's internal data. PUBG, VALORANT, Minecraft, DotA 2, Arknights, Final Fantasy and Royale High also made the list as the top 10 tweeted about games in Malaysia.

Globally, Japan ranked first among countries that tweeted the most about gaming in 2021, followed by the US and South Korea. Southeast Asian countries Thailand, the Philippines and Indonesia also made it to the list of top 10 countries with the most tweets about gaming. Also making the list were Brazil, the UK, France and India.

This year, Twitter says it will help users stay up to date on all content and conversation from esports events such as the Call of Duty League, ESL Pro League, Halo Championship Series, Rocket League Championship Series and Fortnite Championship Series, as well as Riot Games leagues and major gaming events.
