Garuda Indonesia has partnered with Indonesian fashion brand Cap Bali to unveil a special aircraft livery titled “The flying heritage of Indonesia’s unity”, marking the 80th anniversary of Indonesia’s independence.

The Boeing 737-800NG with registration PK-GFU showcases the work of two young Indonesian artists. Erika Richardo contributed the illustration “People with Culture”, featuring characters from 16 Indonesian ethnic groups, while Raka Jana designed Jejak Garuda”, blending cultural and natural motifs such as orchids, traditional weaving, and kayonan patterns.

“The launch of this special livery marks Garuda Indonesia’s commitment not only to building connectivity across the entire archipelago, but also to weaving our collective identity as a nation. The livery’s design reflects the narrative of Indonesia’s diversity, reinforced by the 80th Independence anniversary logo, which embodies unity and progress, in line with this year’s celebration theme,” said Wamildan Tsani, president director of Garuda Indonesia.

Putu Fitri Ertaningsih, director of Cap Bali, added, “Aligned with Garuda Indonesia’s mission, Cap Bali also seeks to tell the story of Indonesia’s cultural heritage through ready-to-wear fashion. By incorporating cultural elements into contemporary designs, Cap Bali presents Indonesia’s traditional motifs in a way that is widely accessible, comfortable, and suitable for various occasions - so that ultimately, everyone can take pride in wearing Indonesian motifs.”

The aircraft’s maiden flight with the special livery was scheduled from Jakarta to Samarinda on 16 August 2025. It was also set to operate on a themed “Special flight peringatan HUT ke-80” from Jakarta to Denpasar (GA-422) on 17 August 2025, featuring exclusive passenger services to commemorate Indonesia’s Independence Day.

In addition to showcasing visual artistry, Garuda Indonesia and Cap Bali are offering a special promotion of up to 30% off at all Cap Bali outlets through the GarudaBoardingPass programme. Cap Bali also plans to launch a fashion collection inspired by the livery design.

“Going forward, Garuda Indonesia will continue to explore various collaboration schemes with other leading brands, including creative economy players from across the archipelago. Through these partnerships, we hope Garuda Indonesia can not only strengthen its position as the nation’s proud flag-carrier, but also take a strategic role in fostering the growth of the best works by the nation’s young talents,” Tsani concluded.

To celebrate Indonesia’s 80th Independence Day, Garuda Indonesia also offered a special fare discount of up to IDR 800,000 (US$49.2) on one-way and return tickets across domestic and international routes. Using the promo code MERDEKA, customers could book until 17 August 2025, with travel valid through 28 February 2026.

This is not the first time Garuda Indonesia has used its aircraft as a canvas for public awareness campaigns. During the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020, the airline introduced a special mask-themed livery called “Indonesia pride” on its B737-800 NG fleet, designed by young artist Jailani, winner of the “Fly your design through the sky” competition.

Featuring cultural and natural symbols such as Balinese Barong, temples, and Komodo dragons, the initiative, supported by the Artha Graha Peduli Foundation, aimed to promote mask-wearing and health protocols, while encouraging wider participation in the “Ayo pakai masker” campaign.
