Garuda Indonesia launches female pilot ‘hero’ in mobile game in support of esports

Garuda Indonesia has launched a game character named “GIA” in Indonesian mobile game, Lokapala: Saga of The Six Realms. The character takes the form of a Garuda Indonesia female pilot, who acts as one of knights in the game.

According to a press release, GIA was introduced in commemoration of the National Heroes Day on 10 November to reflect the fighting spirit of Indonesia’s national heroes. Besides GIA, there will be nine more thematic characters with the names of Indonesian heroes. The move is part of a partnership with a local game developer, Anantarupa Studio. The game, which is currently in the soft launch phase, will be available to all in January 2020.

Garuda Indonesia CEO Ari Askara said the partnership seeks to reinforce Garuda Indonesia’s commitment to support the creativity potential of the young generation as well as the hobbies of Millennials. He hopes that it will generate more interest in professional gaming and make Indonesia’s esports industry more competitive globally.

He added that in the future, Garuda Indonesia will continue to look beyond Garuda Indonesia’s core products for other potential sources of revenue. “We see that the development of esports in Indonesia is increasing every year as a sub sector of the creative economy. Moreover, the GIA character as one of support heroes is expected to strengthen the Garuda Indonesia [brand], which has been known by public,” he explained.
