Fast food giants walk for hunger relief

KFC and Pizza Hut Malaysia recently held its ‘Be the Movement Charity Walk' in support of World Hunger Relief 2012, with over 12,000 participants.

It saw participation from KFC and Pizza Hut staff and employees, inmates from local welfare and charitable homes, members of the media and the public.

The carnival-like event took place on 6 October in Putrajaya with activities and performances by local artistes and entertainers.

The charity walk was the grand finale to KFC and Pizza Hut's annual World Hunger Relief campaign that was held over the past two months, which raised RM2.2 million throughout the campaign period.

This year's fundraiser saw KFC introduce its ‘World Hunger Meal' promotion, Pizza Hut's ‘Hut's Power Meal' promotion and PHD's ‘World Hunger Speedy Combos' and ‘Double Deals' promotion.

Meals were charged an extra 50sen for KFC and 60sen Pizza Hut and PHD with all money collected going to the fund.

All proceeds will be distributed to the United Nations World Food Programme (WFP) for hunger relief work in third world and underdeveloped countries as well as to several local charities.

"We are leveraging the power of our restaurants to raise funds for and create awareness of world hunger relief," said Dato' Ayub Mion (second from right), chairman of QSR Brands and KFC Holdings Malaysia, the franchise and operator of Pizza Hut and KFC respectively.

The two month-long activity was the local leg of this year's Yum! Brands, Inc. annual World Hunger Relief campaign to raise awareness, volunteerism and funds for WFP and other hunger relief agencies.

In the six years since the start of Yum! Brands, Inc's annual World Hunger Relief campaign in 2007, KFC and Pizza Hut Malaysia have now raised a total of RM8.63 million as their contribution to this global effort.
