De Beers taps Tang poetry to launch 'Desert Diamonds' in China

De Beers Group has unveiled its campaign film for "Desert diamonds," extending the launch across 25 key Chinese cities timed around Jewellery & Gem WORLD Hong Kong (JGW) and the Golden Week holiday season.

Following its regional debut in Shanghai on 29 July, the campaign blends classical Chinese poetry with contemporary aesthetics, reinterpreting De Beers' iconic "A diamond is forever" slogan for a new generation while positioning natural diamonds within a framework of cultural resonance and personal narrative.

The "Desert diamonds" category represents De Beers’ contemporary take on natural diamonds, emphasising the rarity and natural formation of each stone over billions of years. Designed to move natural diamonds beyond traditional bridal occasions into self-gifting and personal expression, the collection targets younger consumers seeking authenticity and individuality over conventional definitions of value.

The campaign's creative direction draws inspiration from Tang Dynasty poet Wang Wei's classic line: "In the great desert, a single smoke rises straight; over the long river, the setting sun is round." The film uses a minimalist visual aesthetic to translate the vastness and stillness of the desert, pairing stripped-back imagery with the resonant tones of the gong, a traditional Chinese instrument.

Lü Mo, director, De Beers, said: "Young people today move between tradition and modernity, with classical Chinese aesthetics and global culture coexisting in their inner world. At its core, Wang Wei's poetry embodies a distinctly Eastern form of minimalism — 'straight,' 'long' and 'round' reveal the original forms of all things once everything superfluous has been stripped away, reflecting an independent spirit that neither follows trends nor caters to popular taste."

"This resonates with the younger generation's refusal to be defined by external expectations. Through this film, I hope to convey that your sharpness, your edges, and even all the 'imperfections' that others may never see are precisely the irreplaceable marks that make you who you are," he added.

According to consumer research conducted by De Beers Group in China, 95% of respondents expressed interest in owning a Desert Diamond, 94% agreed the category is distinctive, and 96% viewed it as an innovative departure from traditional diamond offerings.

The integrated omnichannel campaign is rolling out across major tier-one and key market cities—including Beijing, Shanghai, and Guangzhou—via digital television and social media platforms.

To drive conversion at the retail level, De Beers Group is collaborating with its three primary strategic retail partners in China—Chow Tai Fook, Chow Sang Sang, and TSL (Tse Sui Luen)—to feature the collection and campaign materials across physical store networks.
