Cosmopolitan makes Malaysia comeback with Chinese edition

Chronicle Media is bringing Cosmopolitan to Malaysia, with the iconic women’s lifestyle brand set to launch its Chinese-language edition across digital and social media in January 2027.

The launch, in partnership with Hearst Magazines International, will be followed by the debut of a bi-monthly print edition with its January/February 2027 issue.

The Malaysian edition aims to bridge international trends and local perspectives, with content reflecting the country’s diverse culture and evolving social landscape.

Cosmopolitan magazine previously ran in Malaysia as a Malay publication under Blu Inc until the publishing house ceased operations in 2020.

Editorial coverage will span beauty, fashion, lifestyle, wellness, careers and relationships, alongside broader conversations shaping contemporary society. The multi-platform strategy will combine locally produced stories with selected content from Cosmopolitan’s international network across print, digital and social media.

According to a media kit seen by A+M, the Cosmopolitan Malaysia team believes that Malaysia’s Chinese-speaking audience demonstrates a strong appetite for sophisticated, aspirational lifestyle content.

Its target audience is educated, bilingual or trilingual women who are highly urbanised, with strong purchasing power and strongly interested in career and wealth development. The core age range is targeted to be 25 to 45 years old.

A+M has reached out to Chronicle Media for more.

Kim St. Clair Bodden, senior vice president of editorial and brand director at Cosmopolitan, said the launch builds on the brand’s focus on staying relevant to the cultural conversations shaping each generation.

“Cosmopolitan has always evolved alongside its audience, staying relevant to the cultural conversations and experiences that shape each generation,” she said.

“The launch in Malaysia is an extension of that vision. It allows us to bring the global voice and influence of Cosmopolitan to the market, while creating space for local stories, voices, and culture to be at the heart of the brand.”

Elsa Dang has been appointed editor-in-chief of Cosmopolitan Malaysia, where she will lead the title’s editorial direction and oversee the development of content tailored to local audiences. She was previously editor-in-chief at Citta Bella, a Chinese-language women's fashion and lifestyle magazine in Malaysia, for twenty years.

Dang said the publication would seek to reflect the diversity of Malaysian women while connecting readers with conversations and developments beyond the country’s borders.

“Cosmopolitan has always been a brand that encourages women to be curious, confident, and unapologetically themselves,” she said.

“For Malaysia, we see an opportunity to build a platform that reflects the diversity of our audience and the culture we live in, while connecting them to what is happening beyond our borders. It is about creating content that is relevant to where our readers are today and where they want to go next.”

The launch extends Cosmopolitan’s global footprint, with Chronicle Media and Hearst Magazines International looking to connect Malaysian readers with the brand’s international perspective while giving local voices a platform.

With digital and social channels set to lead the rollout ahead of its first print issue, Cosmopolitan Malaysia will join the market with a multi-platform approach aimed at bringing global culture closer to the experiences and interests of local audiences.

This announcement comes a month after GQ Singapore made its print debut across the causeway, perhaps highlighting the growing value of physical media.
