Will your careers take off in the Year of the Tiger?

新年快乐, 万事如意! 事业有成, 招财进宝! (Happy Lunar New Year and may you be blessed in everything you do! May you be successful in your career and may the riches flow into your house!)

The year 2021 was expected to be one of recovery, as pharmaceutical companies raced to produce and distribute vaccines worldwide. However, it still remained a tough time for businesses and consumers, as some countries cautiously reopened, and economic activity is still in flux.

In Chinese culture, the tiger is a symbol of courage, which might just be the trait everyone needs as the world heads into the third year of COVID-19. According to the 2022 Templeton Global Macro outlook released last December by investment firm Franklin Templeton, Asia is projected to have some of the strongest growth rates in the world this year. Looking ahead, 2022 is likely to predominantly be a pan-Asia story.

Several countries have large current account surpluses, low fiscal deficits, low levels of debt and relatively normalised interest rates compared with the extraordinarily low-to-negative rates across advanced economies.

Additionally, many of the growth drivers in the region are aligned with trending sectors such as pharmaceuticals, digitalisation, big data and high tech, notably in places such as South Korea.

After experiencing economic headwinds from reinstating lockdowns over the summer of 2021 to counter the Delta variant, several countries including Malaysia and Singapore have pivoted towards a policy stance of "living with COVID-19". According to Franklin Templeton, these reopenings can be expected to provide a substantial boost for the domestic economies, as well as external trade.

Meanwhile, UBS termed 2022 as the "Year of Discovery", predicting a lower usage of some of the tech trends that were most heavily accelerated by the pandemic as individuals return to the "real world". These included eCommerce, telemedicine, and video conferencing.

Looking further ahead, the net-zero carbon transition and surging technological disruption are proving to be the biggest investment trends of the decade.

According to UBS, this brings opportunity in greentech and sustainable solutions, and in enabling technologies such as AI, big data, and cybersecurity.

Global economy in a weaker position

On the other hand, the International Monetary Fund (IMF) said that the global economy enters 2022 "in a weaker position than previously expected". The spread of the Omicron variant has resulted in countries reimposing mobility restrictions. Rising energy prices and supply disruptions have also led to higher and more broad-based inflation than anticipated, notably in the US and many emerging market and developing economies, the IMF said.

The ongoing retrenchment of China’s real estate sector and slower-than-expected recovery of private consumption also have limited growth prospects. Overall, IMF predicts global growth to be moderate from 5.9% in 2021 to 4.4% in 2022, half a percentage point lower for this year than in the October World Economic Outlook. According to the IMF, this largely reflects forecast markdowns in US and China.

As the region ushers in the Year of the Tiger, here's a look at how this new year will impact you in terms of your career and wealth. The predictions were taken from Yuan Zhong Siu's website, a feng shui company founded by Master Phang.
