Sarawak Tourism Board is putting the state’s landscapes, culture and local communities at the centre of a new adventure reality series, teaming up with AXN Asia to take destination marketing into entertainment.

Titled "AXN ultimate challenge: Sarawak", the four-part series follows two teams of content creators as they compete in challenges inspired by Sarawak’s culture and natural environment. The collaboration between AXN Asia and Sarawak Tourism Board aims to showcase the Malaysian destination to audiences through a mix of competition, cultural discovery and social storytelling.

Each 15-minute episode sees the teams take on physical and mental challenges while exploring local communities, traditions and lesser-known experiences across Sarawak. Themes including eco-tourism, community, discovery and tradition are woven throughout the series.

Among the challenges is foraging for sago worms, a regional delicacy and source of protein, with each episode featuring a Sarawak-specific challenge alongside a prize and penalty for the competing teams.

The series is produced by KCGM Studios and hosted by Mark O'Dea, with content creators Khenji Saito and Adam Samuel competing against Estelle Fly and Saffron Sharpe.

Local personalities including chef Achang Libat, Louis Samai, Luke Kenny Doo and blowpipe masters Cikgu Nyoging and Alfa also feature in the series, bringing local perspectives to the experiences and stories showcased on screen. Sheraton Kuching Hotel serves as the show's official hotel partner.

Beyond the main episodes, the creators will produce their own content throughout the competition, giving audiences another view of their experiences in Sarawak through their individual perspectives. The social content component extends the destination storytelling beyond the programme itself and taps into the creators' respective audiences.

"AXN ultimate challenge: Sarawak" premiered on AXN Asia's YouTube channel on 31 July, followed by AXN Taiwan's YouTube channel on 4 August. The series also began airing across AXN East Asia, AXN Singapore and AXN China on 4 August, with new episodes airing every Tuesday for four weeks.

“Sarawak is a destination where adventure, culture and nature come together through authentic experiences deeply connected to our landscapes, communities and way of life,” said Sharzede Datu Haji Salleh Askor, CEO of Sarawak Tourism Board.

She added, “‘AXN ultimate challenge: Sarawak’ offers viewers an exciting way to discover this diversity – from challenges inspired by our natural environment to cultural encounters and local stories that make every journey here unique. We hope the series will inspire audiences across the region to discover Sarawak, Malaysia for themselves.”

In tandem, George Chien, co-founder, president and CEO of KC Global Media said, "KC Global Media Asia is thrilled to partner with AXN Asia and the Sarawak Tourism Board on this unique original project."

"Our forward-thinking team has created an immersive adventure with ‘AXN ultimate challenge: Sarawak’ that puts the culture, people and spirit of adventure at the heart of the story. We look forward to audiences across the world becoming inspired to experience Sarawak for themselves," he added.

The partnership builds on AXN Asia's previous destination-led content collaborations in Malaysia. In 2024, the KC Global Media-owned entertainment brand partnered Tourism Malaysia on "Unfading memoirs", a travel production showcasing the country's cultural offerings and landscapes.

The mini-series followed travellers across Kuala Lumpur, Penang, Sabah and Sarawak, presenting the destinations through different perspectives. It was hosted by personalities and travellers Justin Bratton and Selina Lo alongside food and travel enthusiast Erwan Heussaff, with the production aimed at encouraging audiences to discover and advocate for destinations across Malaysia.
