Beyond the brief: Why agencies need to think like business partners
share on
The brief is often where an agency’s work begins. It should not be where its thinking ends.
This is particularly true in Hong Kong, where SMEs operate with increasingly limited time, people, and budgets. For many smaller businesses, the boundaries between branding, marketing, business development, and sales are no longer as clearly defined as they once were.
Marketing is expected not only to build awareness but also to generate enquiries, support sales, and ultimately contribute to business growth.
That changes what clients should expect from their agencies - and what agencies should expect of themselves.
A client may come to us asking for more social media content, a new website, or an advertising campaign. But sometimes the more important question is: what are we actually trying to achieve?

Perhaps the real challenge is not a lack of content, but a lack of clarity in the proposition. Perhaps more advertising will not solve the problem if enquiries are not being followed up effectively. Or perhaps the business simply does not have the budget to do everything at once.
In these situations, we believe an agency's responsibility is not simply to say yes.
Sometimes, the most useful advice is to recommend doing less.
This does not mean an agency should replace a client's sales team or pretend to understand their business better than the people running it. Clients know their customers, operations, and industries better than we do. Our role is to bring an outside perspective, ask the difficult questions, challenge assumptions when necessary, and connect marketing activity with the commercial reality of the business.
This is also why we believe that bigger is not automatically better. More platforms, more content, bigger productions, or newer technologies do not necessarily create better results. The objective should not be to maximise an agency's scope, but to maximise the value a client receives from the resources available.
Technology and AI will undoubtedly make marketing faster and more efficient. But efficiency only matters if we are becoming more efficient at solving the right problem.

At Hyphen, this is how we approach our work - regardless of the size of the client or the budget available. We do not believe every business needs the same marketing mix, and we do not believe every problem requires the most elaborate solution.
Being recognised this year at MARKETING-INTERACTIVE's Agency of the Year awards, including for Client Acquisition and Boutique Agency of the Year, has been encouraging. More importantly, it reinforces a principle we want to continue building on: an agency's value should not be measured by how much it can sell, but by how well it can help a client decide what is worth investing in.
Perhaps that is what it really means to go beyond the brief.
